Ban undocumented students? What are they afraid of?
A recent article in the Sentinel (“Florida votes to ban undocumented students from state universities,” Sept. 4) explains that “Florida’s Board of Governors voted to ban undocumented students from the state’s universities …” I am truly baffled by this decision. What are they so afraid of? What is so abhorrent about educating young people? As I see it, an educated population is a more productive population. A more productive population reduces poverty and adds to economic growth. An educated population has better health literacy and increased life expectancy. And, an educated population has lower crime rates. These self-proclaimed Christians in politics have forgotten that we are called to care for the poor and marginalized. The Bible demands we practice compassion and justice. Where is the compassion and justice in banning “undocumented students from the state’s universities?”

Donalds’ ads are changing their tune
The political advertising by conservative Byron Donalds, running for governor, is extremely quizzical.
Donalds had been touting his ties to Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis. He has since (apparently due to discontent from moderate Republicans) adopted less conservative themes, seemingly depicting himself as a regular “good” dad, working for the good of all Floridians.
In his flood of political ads, he now depicts a poor Black single mother and family that he implies will benefit from his election to governor. It is obvious to me that his campaign is aware that he will probably need Black votes to win his election. It appears that his campaign had adopted a “say and promise anything that you have to, just win” strategy.
When casting my vote, there are a few realities I need to remember: Donalds represents the political party that struck down DEI, a program that represented hope for so many minority futures; revamped SNAP and EBT so much that there has been a severe drop in grants to those poor in-need; almost completely negated Black representation in Florida government through gerrymandering; eliminated most, if not all, Black high ranking officers from the military, and has, in my view, legalized malfeasance in government.
Beware of wolves donning sheep’s clothing to fulfil their political agenda.

Socialists taking over Democratic Party
If the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) had any scruples, they would create a party from the ground up. All of it — the financing, the get-out-the-vote infrastructure, the mailing lists. It’d be a harder thing to do but would honor others of unlike mind (the actual Democrats). But that’s not what they’re doing.

They’re seemingly taking over the Democratic Party, a political party on the left in the USA but not to the extent of extolling Marxism, or advocating for open borders — well, openly — or subjugating the Supreme Court and the executive branch to the Congress, an approximation of “democracy” that would make our Framers blanch.
Meanwhile, the geriatric “leadership” of the Democratic Party, the one that opened the borders during President Biden’s term, has opened its arms to an element that does not intend to “influence” or “assimilate into” the Democratic Party so much as subsume it or replace it, whichever seems easier. This amounts to that geriatric “leadership” extolling “big tent” word salads while the upstarts take over the tent so they can burn it down.
Shame on modern Democrats for not kicking the DSA out of the Democratic Party. I believe the DSA is only “democratic” until “democracy” comes into conflict with “socialism,” at which point the sprinkles will be removed and we’ll be left with plain old socialism. And as I see it, nobody wins in that outcome. Not even the DSA.
