Super 16 No. 1 DeLand leads Lake Mary 7-0 after one quarter | Football Live Report

After an eventful Thursday night of high school football, 23 more games are on tap for tonight —  topped by a Spec Martin Stadium showdown for 2025 state champ Lake Mary against Orlando area No. 1 DeLand.

Last November, the Rams went to DeLand and outscored the previously-unbeaten Bulldogs 40-31 in a region final.

We’ll again be watching the skies after the start of almost all of Thursday’s games were delayed due to stormy weather. Games at Lyman and Winter Springs were moved to Monday.

The Weather Channel radar shows Lake County getting barraged with rain. But if we’re lucky, looks like the stormy weather might skirt most of Orange, Seminole and Volusia.

Rain has fallen in the Orlando area this afternoon and forecasters say it will likely get stormy before 7 p.m. games start kicking off.

No. 8 Lake Mary at No. 1 DeLand

TOUCHDOWN: Deland is on the board first as Taihj Moore goes 6 yard for a touchdown. Quarterback Gardner Nordman had a big part in that 80 yard scoring drive with 29 yards of rushing on three carries and then he hit Moore with a 29 yard pass to set up the touchdown.

Lake Mary quarterback RemyJarman is out four to six weeks with a broken collarbone and tonight getting his first varsity start is freshman Max Chapman .

Unlike recent pre-game weather, tonight the atmosphere is beautiful for this football game at DeLand as we get ready to start on time. 7 p.m. kickoff.

PRE-GAME NOTES:

Lake Mary (1-1) is coming off a stinging 17-9 loss to Osceola.

DeLand is also 1-1 with a valiant loss 49-35 at home against St. Frances (Baltimore) team that is ranked as high as No. 2 nationally. That game was tied 35-35 with 10:47 to go.

DeLand is No. 2 and Lake Mary No. 7 in the MaxPreps Class 6A rankings.

No. 2 The First Academy (3-0) at South Lake (0-2)

This game is delayed due to stormy weather.

TFA is No. 4 in 2A, a top-heavy classification. This is a third consecutive road trip for the Royals. They won close games at Edgewater and Port Charlotte.

Lakeland at No. 9 Kissimmee Osceola

Osceola unable to get anything going on offense for a third straight possession. Kowboys have 2 punts and an interception. Lakeland takes over at its own 30 with 10:27 left in Q2, still up 14-0.

Lakeland now up 14-0 on Osceola with 6:06 left in the first quarter.

Lakeland takes a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

PRE-GAME NOTES”

This is a fabled rivalry, and is back to being a district game. Osceola is 0-3 vs. the Dreadnaughts since the Kowboys scored a 35-28 playoff win in its 2014 state runner-up season.

Lakeland (1-1) is No. 3 and Kissimmee Osceola (2-1) No. 8 in 5A.

No. 12 East Ridge at South Sumter, 7:30 p.m.

East Ridge is 3-0.

The schools meet for the first time since 2014, when the Raiders routed East Ridge 45-0.

Lake Minneola at No. 16 St. Cloud

After one quarter: St. Cloud 15, Lake Minneola 0.

Jerome Ortiz, now playing defensive  back, intercepted a deep pass attempt by the Hawks. St. Cloud takes over at its 10-yard line.

The Bulldogs drive for another touchdown, despite several penalties. Joel Ortiz got to the corner and scored from 10 yards out. That makes it 15-0 for St. Cloud in the first quarter

St. Cloud breaks up 4th-and-1 pass play. Takes over near midfield.

St. Cloud’s Jayden Taylor went 80 yards for a touchdown on the opening kickoff. It was a flea flicker handoff that gave him room to run and he shed several tacklers on his way to the end zone. Bulldogs convert 2-point conversion and lead 8-0.

This game is underway with an early start.

PRE-GAME NOTES:

St. Cloud (2-1) overpowered the Hawks 55-6 last season. Last week, the Bulldogs pulled out an overtime win against South Sumter.

Lake Minneola is 1-2.

Thursday’s Super 16 games

No. 3 Jones defeats Boone, 24-9

The rugged Jones defense recorded three sacks, an interception, a blocked punt and a blocked field goal while keeping Boone’s offense out of the end zone until the final possession of the game.

The Tigers (2-1) held the Braves (1-2) to 156 offensive yards. Dajour Webb recorded two sacks and Fred Ards recorded a sack and blocked a field goal on one of Boone’s three drives that ended with a scoring attempt at the end of the first half.

Jayden Donaldson picked off Boone quarterback Jake Nassar in the first quarter as part of the dominant defensive showing.

“We expect that,” coach Dale Williams said. “It’s the expectation. We expect it and they are doing it.”

Jones held Boone in check. But the offense never quite seemed to get going despite often having a short field.

Quarterback Peyton Carroll threw for 132 yards on 14-for-18 passing. He found wide receiver Antwoine Glover twice for long touchdowns. But both scores came in and-goal situations after Jones had a negative play – a hold negating a short touchdown run on the first and a fumble on the snap prior to the score on the second touchdown throw.

Boone recorded its first points of the game on a safety after two bad snaps backed Jones up at their goal line with the backup quarterback in.

“We always want to see more,” Williams said. “But we know it’s a process. Everything won’t come right away. Just keep chipping and grinding. We always want more.”

Boone found some life at the end of each half. The Braves drove to the 33-yard line before settling for a 51-yard field goal that was blocked at the end of the first half.

Boone set up its lone touchdown on a 52-yard pass from Nassar to Jordan Durandisse that ended with a horse collar tackle by Jones and an unsportsmanlike conduct from Boone to set the Braves up at the Tigers’ 16-yard line.

Boone finally broke through on a five-yard run by Max Edmunds to ensure the offense was not shutout in the game.

Jones stays home to host Orlando rival Edgewater next week.

IN-GAME UPDATES:

TOUCHDOWN: Boone rumbles into the end zone for the first time in a 5-yard run by Max Edmunds. The score was set up by a 52-yard pass from Jake Nassar to Jordan Durandisse that got the Braves inside the red zone. Jones leads 24-9 with 1:27 remaining.

A pair of bad snaps backs Jones up at their goal line. The second bad snap goes through the end zone to get Boone on the board. Jones leads 24-2 with 3:28 to play.

Boone got a 4th and 1 after an 11-yard pass from Jake Nassar to Tyler Dicko. But Jones sniffs out the option run on fourth down and tackle Jake Shockley in the backfield. Jones leads Boone 24-0 with 4:14 to play.

Jones was knocking on the door just outside of the red zone when Boone sacked Peyton Carroll and forced a fumble. The Braves pointed after three plays but Jones failed to field the punt and Boone recovered at the Jones 33.

Jones has the ball at midfield as the third quarter ends. Tigers lead Boone 24-0.

Jones set themselves up at the Boone 25 after blocking a punt. But they could not advance the ball and come off the field after failing to convert on fourth and three. Tigers still lead 24-0.

TOUCHDOWN: Peyton Carroll again finds Antwoine Glover in the corner of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown. Jones leads Boone 24-0 with 6:58 to play in the third quarter.

Jones leads 17-0 at the half.

Boone drives into Jones territory and lines up for a 51-yard field goal to end the half. But the Tigers’ Fred Ards breaks through the line to block the kick. Jones has three sacks, including two from Dajour Webb.

FIELD GOAL: Jones could not take advantage of a short field after a shanked punt. They settle for a 39-yard field goal from Spencer Bartholomew. Jones leads Boone 17-0 with 1:34 left in the second quarter.

TOUCHDOWN: Jones cashes in on the turnover. Peyton Carroll finds Antwoine Glover for a 17-yard touchdown. Jones leads Boone 14-0 with 6:15 left in the second quarter.

Boone’s Jake Nassar tries to throw it downfield to get out of the shadow of the end zone. But Jones’ Jayden Donaldson intercepts the throw near midfield. His return sets the Tigers up at the Boone 31.

Jones leads 7-0. And the Tigers are at the door again after getting a punt at midfield. Boone’s only first down was the result of a roughing the passer penalty.

TOUCHDOWN: Jones took over at midfield and ran the ball into the end zone. Devin Coleman started things with a 27-yard run and Detrun Parker finished the final 16 yards, scoring on a third and goal from the one. Jones leads Boone 7-0 with 1:55 left in the first quarter.

Boone’s Tyler Dicko halts a promising Jones drive with an interception near the 30 as Jones’ Peyton Carroll scrambled out of the pocket searching for a receiver.

Boone took over near midfield after forcing a punt. A roughing the passer penalty drew the Braves closer. But they hit a wall on defense. Cooper Prather’s 49-yard field goal was short. Boone and Jones are scoreless with 8:16 left in the first quarter.

After a 77-minute delay, Boone kicks off to Jones and we are underway.

8 p.m. – Jones and Boone are back on the field for warmups.

7:29 p.m. – Both teams came out for warmups and are now heading back to the locker rooms because of another lightning strike at Jones. We might be a while.

7:20 p.m. – Boone is taking the field for warmups and they are starting to let people into the stadium at Jones.

6:36 p.m. – Just arrived at Jones. Players are not on the field and nobody is in the stadium. I imagine that means we are in a lightning delay.

PRE-GAME NOTES:

Both teams are 1-1 going into their first meeting since Jones won 51-14 in 2023. The Tigers scored a 12-6 win Saturday against an Evans team that beat Boone 47-13.

Jones is ranked No. 4 in Class 4A.

No. 13 Lake Nona defeated No. 4 Edgewater, 24-3

Lake Nona (3-1), playing at home, wins what likely is the biggest win in program history. With a smash mouth performance on defense, and some magic on offense, Lake Nona was able to silence Edgewater.

The Eagles (2-2) were 49-5 vs. Orange County Public Schools teams in a 10-year span dating to 2017. Four of those losses were to Jones. The other was against Boone in 2017.

Lake Nona quarterback Eli Nickerson returned to action after missing games and rewarded the home crowd with two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown.

Edgewater took the lead on its first drive with a 47-yard field goal after taking off eight minutes from the clock, ending the first quarter up 3-0. After that, the Lake Nona defense cranked up the heat – pressuring both Cruz James and Joe Aicher and stifling running back Jaelyn Powell for the rest of the game.

“We’re super excited about the physicality of football that we play now at Lake Nona. The kids have worked hard in the weight room all summer long,” said Lake Nona head coach David Aubrey. “Seeing these guys gel together and put a complete game together, we’re excited about the direction we are going in.”

The defense forced three turnover on downs in the second half, but the highlight of the night came on the offensive side of the ball.

On 4th and 21 from the Edgewater 34 with 5:50 left in the fourth quarter, the snap got by Nickerson, who felt the heat of Edgewater defenders raining down on him. Amazingly, he was able to recover and escape from the pressure. Looking downfield, he found Sebastian Lora for the second time to put Lake Nona up 14-3.

Nickerson would then score himself on the ground to make it 21-3, and Andres Quintero hit a 28-yard field goal to cap off the night.

IN-GAME UPDATES:

FIELD GOAL: Andres Quintero’s 28-yard field goal is good, increasing the Lake Nona lead. The Lions lead 24-3 with 1:08 left in the game.

Joe Aicher is sacked on fourth down, resulting in another takeaway on downs for the Lake Nona defense. First down Lions at the Edgewater 27. 2:42 4Q.

TOUCHDOWN: Eli Nickerson keeps it himself and sheds several tackles en route to the end zone. That goes 16 yards on that touchdown run to go along with his two passing touchdowns. Extra point good. 21-3 Lake Nona. 4:47 4Q.

Octavius Lewis down for Edgewater but now standing up with assistance. The cart comes out onto the field to help Lewis off.

The Lake Nona defense is not yielding an inch after that opening drive of the game.

Cruz James’ pass on fourth down falls incomplete. Turnover on downs, ball goes back to Lake Nona. Lions, leading 14-3, take over at the Edgewater 16 with 4:59 left in the fourth quarter.

TOUCHDOWN: On a seemingly broken play on 4th and 21, Eli Nickerson bobbles the snap, regains his composure and finds Sebastian Lora in the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown. Extra point good. 14-3 Lake Nona with 5:50 left in the fourth quarter.

Elijah Nickerson can’t connect open receivers on back to back plays that could have gone for touchdowns. Third down and 21 for Lake Nona at the Edgewater 34.

Lake Nona defense forces a turnover on downs as Cruz James’ pass to Makyi Dennard-Scott falls incomplete. First down Lake Nona with 2:16 left in the third quarter. The Lions lead 7-3.

Jahvon Robinson picks off Eli Nickerson’s pass for Edgewater and returns it past mid field to the Lake Nona 47. First down Edgewater with 4:16 left in the third quarter.

After a series of penalties that had them back to 2nd and 31, Elijah Nickerson finds Sebastian Lora for a 20-yard completion on 3rd and 15 to give Lake Nona a first down.

Charles Woodson Jr. with a 30-yard punt return to set Lake Nona up in Edgewater territory. Lions will start their drive at the Edgewater 45.

Cruz James finds Dylan Troutman for an apparent 20-yard touchdown, but it’s wiped out by a holding call. Third down and long for Edgewater at the Lake Nona 30.

Jaelyn Powell picks up the first down with his legs on 4th and 1 to keep the Edgewater drive alive. First down at the Lake Nona 25.

PRE-GAME NOTES:

First football meeting between these Metro Conference teams. Both are 2-1 with losses by close margins. Edgewater lost 21-14 to The First Academy in Week 2. Lake Nona lost 13-10 in overtime against Winter Park last season.

Edgewater is No. 8 and Lake Nona No. 22 in the 6A rankings. They are in different districts.

No. 5 West Orange defeats Ocoee, 13-12

West Orange (4-0) staves off a late Ocoee (2-2) effort. That’s four wins in a row in the “Shield” rivalry game for the Warriors, all in hard-fought games.

The game came down to the final seconds as Ocoee missed a 40-yard field goal attempt.

West Orange’s game winning touchdown came at the 8:01 mark of the third quarter. Senior running back Jayden Ammons eluded defenders on a 34-yard run.

Ocoee senior running back Kamari Shaw scored the game’s first touchdown with a 58-yard run. West Orange responded with a 3-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Caleb Postell.

The Knights would employ the single-wing offense in the second half and rushed for 167 yards. Kevin “KJ” Bridges led the way with 84 yards in the second half on 18 carries. He finished with 114 total rushing yards on 23 carries and Ocoee finished with 245 rushing yards.

Ocoee senior receiver receiver Jeremiah Wilson scored on a 5-yard touchdown in the third quarter and finished with 66 rushing yards, all coming in the second half. He had a couple more big gains that were called back because of holding penalties.

Penalties plagued both teams in the game at West Orange, with both having more than 100 penalty yards.

“Hats off to Ocoee. They did some things and had a lot of success,” said West Orange coach Geno Thompson. “We made a lot of mistakes, but (Ocoee) did a good job. They had a great plan.”

Ocoee bottled up Warrior junior quarterback Andrew “AJ” Chung. He completed 8-of-16 passes for 115 yards. Senior receiver Yuto Kawamura-Johnson finished with 4 catches for 65 yards. He had a signature 58-yard catch and run in which he bobbled the catch, but then eluded defenders for the big gain.

To start the second half, Warriors has a new kicker as Jordan Heffernan replaces Rodrigo Bigio.

Ocoee has had success running the ball and played stellar defensively. Warriors could not get it going on offense.

West Orange returned the kickoff to its own 35-yard line.Ocoee won the toss and deferred.

Gates are open and kickoff is set for 8:50 p.m.

No rain here, but lightning in the area forced the delay.

This game was pushed back from its 7 p.m. scheduled start time.

PRE-GAME NOTES:

The host Warriors (3-0) have outscored opponents 140-30 with junior QB AJ Chung completing 64.6% of his throws (42-of-65) with 12 TDs and zero interceptions.

The Knights (2-1) have won two in a row after losing to Edgewater.

West Orange leads the “Shield” rivalry 16-7, including three close wins in a row since Ocoee won a playoff rematch in 2022 by a 29-28 score.

West Orange is No. 11, Ocoee No. 18 in 6A.

No. 10 Evans defeated No. 14 Winter Park, 38-14

Evans coach Karlos Odum finally saw Thursday night what he has been expecting all season from his quarterback Will Jackson. The senior, who committed to Maryland, unleashed a passing flurry on Winter Park in a big road win at Showalter Field.

Jackson completed 17 of 22 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for a 13 yard TD in what is his breakout game in his first season at Evans.

Couple Jackson’s passing with 100 yards and a touchdown by running back Daveon Williams and Evans had its offense rolling.

The Evans defense, which has been stout  all season, forced a change of possession on five different Winter Park fourth-down plays inside the 20, as the Wildcats struggled in the red zone.

Winter Park jumped out early and had some momentum. The Wildcats recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff, but then failed to score from inside the five-yard line. After the turnover on downs, Brandon Paisley picked off a Jackson pass and returned it for a touchdown to give the Wildcats an early 7–0 lead.

But it was all Evans after that.

Brian Dillard scored on an 85-yard touchdown pass from Jackson, and Alex Rossi had three catches for 96 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown.

Odum was happy with what he saw.

“Yeah, the kids were trying to come out of a slump. It’s been a really tough three weeks,” Odum said. “Tonight we got an opportunity to kind of play loose and free and I thought we played pretty well for four quarters.”

For the third time tonight, Evans forces Winter Park to turn the ball over on downs, this time at the 8 yard line. The Trojans lead 14–7, 5:03 left in the first half.

Cade Depriest hooks up with a Gunn again for 34 yards and Winter Park is on the move back inside the red zone.

No. 6 Sanford Seminole defeated University (Orange City), 42-7

Seminole improved to 4-0 with a homefield win. They were up 35-0 with 4:00 left in the second quarter and coasted.

Seminole is 3-0 with its defense dominating every game to date. The visiting Titans (1-1) have matched their win total from last year (1-9).

Manatee at No. 15 Lake Brantley

Manatee regained the lead, 24-21, in the third quarter as this game goes back and forth.

Manatee took the lead on Lake Brantley, but the Patriots responded quickly with a 40-yard TD pass from Jackson Stecher to CJ Barnes. It’s now Lake Brantley 21, Manatee 17 with 7:00 left in the third quarter.

Trinity Prep defeated Master’s Academy 30-27

The Saints won it on a 29-yard field goal as time expired. Both teams are 2-2.

Innovation defeated Lake Buena Vista, 63-0

The third-year Bulls stay unbeaten at 4-0.
