Stop using captive animals to entertain<\/h4>\n

The recent sloth deaths at Sloth World were avoidable and unnecessary, and the nationwide outcry showed that the public\u2019s appetite for captive animals being used for profit and entertainment continues to dwindle. Which is why it wasn\u2019t surprising to me that SeaWorld\u2019s attendance continues to decline, with quarter losses being reported last week. There is nothing educational about watching these majestic animals, who swim hundreds of miles in the oceans, swim circles in tiny tanks while the public takes selfies. Over 500 dolphins and whales have died in SeaWorld\u2019s care. Death was their freedom, and will continue to be the only freedom for so many others just so long as the people pay for it. This summer, scratch SeaWorld and other attractions that profit from the exploitation of animals, off your list; You have a choice, the animals do not.<\/p>\n

All rise up against voter suppression<\/h4>\n

The May 14 letter to the editor, \u201cThe best weapon is the vote,\u201d seemingly misses the entire point of the GOP\u2019s massive efforts to gerrymander about 29 states. That opened the door to the Supreme Court ruling that effectively dismantled a key protection of the Voting Rights Act guaranteeing communities of color a chance at fair congressional districts. And it appears the GOP is not yet done; now they\u2019re trying to push the so-called \u201cSAVE America Act\u201d which would effectively further restrict people of color from voting.<\/p>\n

So, with these restrictions specifically thwarting the ability of our neighbors of slightly less white complexions to vote \u2026 don\u2019t you think encouraging the \u201cpeople of color banding together to change the complexion of all governments,\u201d as the letter-writer did, would just be a plastic band-aid used to stanch a mortal wound? I would think all of us should implore all Americans to fight back against the resurrection of Jim Crow.<\/p>\n

Muslims around the world celebrate Eid Al-Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice) after the completion of the Hajj pilgrimage, to be celebrated this year on May 27. This is the second Eid in the Islamic calendar. But why do we celebrate this occasion? What is the significance behind one person\u2019s sacrifice? Eid al-Adha is not simply about remembering a sacrifice. It commemorates the devotion and obedience shown by Prophet Ibrahim and his son, Prophet Ismail. When Prophet Ibrahim saw in a dream that he was commanded by God to sacrifice his son, he was prepared to obey without hesitation, and Prophet Ismail was equally willing to submit to God\u2019s command. Seeing their sincerity and faith, God spared Prophet Ismail and instructed Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice a ram instead. This event serves as a powerful reminder of loyalty and submission to God. Every Eid al-Adha, Muslims sacrifice a livestock animal to honor Prophet Ibrahim\u2019s willingness to give up what was most precious to him for the sake of God. This reminds us that faith and trust in God are what truly matter, and encourages us to strengthen our relationship with Him through our actions and devotion.<\/p>\n
