She\u2019d been there for the same scan a month earlier when a stomachache prompted a visit. Gregory admits she\u2019s not one for the ER, but it felt serious. They told her it was colitis and constipation and sent her home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Drink more fluids,\u2019 they said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, they were calling a colorectal surgeon. Telling her it might be cancer.<\/p>\n<p>It was.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory never left the hospital. They removed \u201cAlbert\u201d the next day (Gregory named the grapefruit-sized mass), along with 71 lymph nodes and most of her colon.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>When state erased a rainbow, Trina Gregory responded with a big, colorful idea<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"RzVLKmvftN\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"282\" loading=\"lazy\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" scrolling=\"no\" security=\"restricted\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/2026\/03\/22\/when-state-erased-a-rainbow-trina-gregory-responded-with-a-big-colorful-idea\/embed\/#?secret=dW06dxnWI2#?secret=RzVLKmvftN\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cWhen state erased a rainbow, Trina Gregory responded with a big, colorful idea\u201d \u2014 Orlando Sentinel\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey left me with 18 inches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is grateful for them.<\/p>\n<p>Gregory\u2019s grandmother had colon cancer, a case that required a colostomy. And though the road ahead will be fraught with both chemo and immunotherapy, and a continuing series of discomforts, Gregory\u2019s colon, now mini and mighty, is still functioning as it should.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>She is candid, but it\u2019s not because it comes naturally, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might be out in the community a lot, but I\u2019m actually a pretty private person. It\u2019s a lot to share, but it felt like if I didn\u2019t, it wouldn\u2019t be authentic. People know I haven\u2019t been [at the restaurant as much]. And when I am there, I\u2019m walking slow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also wants her story to serve as a message, which is one of the reasons she took to Instagram earlier this week to tell people the news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t listen to my body,\u201d she admits, \u201cand colonoscopies are easy to put off because the idea of getting one isn\u2019t great \u2026 but the message is probably more for fellow restaurant owners, honestly, because we don\u2019t take care of ourselves. We\u2019re too busy taking care of everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leading up to the diagnosis, Gregory, though loaded down with the usual stressors, was riding rather high. She\u2019d been a finalist in the Sentinel\u2019s recent Central Floridian of the Year Awards. She was among Orlando Magazine\u2019s Women of the Year honorees. She had found love; she and her significant other, Evan Coutts, got engaged in March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never been happier in my entire life,\u201d she says, crumpling into tears, leaning into the cruelest aspects of this disruption. \u201cI\u2019m just so angry. It\u2019s just one more thing to be worried about when I already have so much stress, when I want to be sure I keep my 22 people employed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She trails off, considering that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I have no choice, either. I need all of them to be there. Because I can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gregory, who has Lynch Syndrome, has a pretty good prognosis. Though it\u2019s a genetic condition that increases the risk of developing certain cancers (\u201call the women on my mother\u2019s side of the family had ovarian cancer by the time they were 45,\u201d she says), Lynch patients\u2019 tumors respond incredibly well to immunotherapy, as the mutated proteins within make them look \u201cforeign\u201d to the body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the part that makes me lucky,\u201d she says, though chemo will likely be as well.<\/p>\n<p>The post-op row, however, is proving tough to hoe for a small business owner used to putting in hours well beyond overtime.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/orlandorelocationreport.com\/?p=1462\">Commentary: Standing with those who served: Florida must support its veterans<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything hurts. It hurts to stand. It hurts to poop. It hurts to pee. Everything\u2019s all healing on the inside. I was cut open from hip to hip. Two days ago, I went to empty the dishwasher, and I couldn\u2019t even get out of bed after.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gregory will have a little more downtime than usual, but she\u2019s still plenty up \u2014 \u201cI did too much yesterday. Today I\u2019m taking it easy\u201d \u2014 though time on the couch means time to do what she\u2019s always done best: bring the community together.<\/p>\n<p>Starting this week through the end of the summer, Se7enbites will have weekly Blue Ribbon Specials every day. One dollar from every meal sold will go directly to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance\u00a0(colorectalcancer.org).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey help fund colonoscopies for people who can\u2019t afford them,\u201d says Gregory.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a vital tool, in fact. Colorectal cancer, when caught early, is highly treatable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want people to get checked. It\u2019s nothing to be embarrassed about. No one wants to talk about their bowel movements or if they\u2019re having trouble or if they\u2019ve noticed they\u2019ve lost a lot of weight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gregory herself lost 40 pounds in five months. Many around her simply thought she was working on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have paid more attention to that,\u201d she admits.<\/p>\n<p>Now, much like journalist Katie Couric, whose Today Show colonoscopy in 2000 sparked what was known as \u201cThe Couric Effect\u201d, a 20 percent uptick in nationwide screening rates \u2014 Couric\u2019s husband lost his own battle with colon cancer at just 42 \u2014 Gregory is shooting a spike in awareness, if only local.
