Another reason for retroactive benefits is a legislative adjustment, such as the one made into law by the Social Security Fairness Act in 2025, which repealed the Social Security Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination Provision.

Retirees can also seek up to six months of retroactive retirement benefits once they have reached their full retirement age (FRA). However, Schreiber advises that you should not automatically request retroactive retirement benefits without understanding the potential disadvantages of doing so.

Schreiber points out that what appears to be a short-term gain is really a shift in the timing of income that is not obvious. The decision to take retroactive retirement payments affects future income, taxation, (possibly) Medicare costs, and survivor benefits. In addition, there are disability issues you should be aware of.

When are you eligible for retroactive benefits? Retroactive benefits are applicable only when you reach your FRA. There is no way that you can receive retroactive benefits for work you have prior to reaching your FRA. You can receive a retroactive payment for as much as six months from the death of a spouse if you meet eligibility requirements.

Impact on future benefits

If you request a lump sum retroactive benefit, your future retirement benefit can be reduced. For example, it could be reduced by up to 4% if you request a six-month retroactive payment. Future benefit payments will not include the six months of earnings that would otherwise be used to compute future earnings.

Read more Hurricane season 2026: Tropical rainfall brings flooding pain to Central Florida

So, in effect, your decision on retroactive benefits should be based on whether it is more important for you to receive the six-month payment, which you can use immediately, or receive an additional monthly lifetime monthly retirement benefit of up to 4% higher.

In both cases there would be tax implications.

Survivor benefit implications

If you pre-decease your spouse, he/she would be eligible to receive whichever is higher, 100% of your Social Security benefit at the time of your death or the benefit based on his/her work record. So, if there is a high probability your spouse will be dependent on the survivor benefit, then the additional 4% lifetime benefit you would be entitled to if you do not request the one-time retroactive benefit is another factor for you to consider.

Possible increase in Medicare premiums

If you decide to request a lump-sum retroactive payment, that payment will be taxable income in the year you receive the payment. As I have discussed in previous columns, Part B and Part D premiums are based on your adjusted income from two years prior. If your income exceeds specific limits established by the IRS, which are published yearly, you may be subject to surcharges in Part B and/or Part D premiums. So, if you accept a retroactive payment in 2026, that additional income will be used in 2028 to determine whether you would be subject to surcharges in premiums for Part B and/or Part D in 2028. So, you should discuss with your tax preparer whether a retroactive payment received in the year you reach your FRA could trigger a future surcharge.

Bottom Line: Social Security issues can be very complex, and accepting a lump retroactive payment on your retirement benefit can have unforeseen, permanent consequences you would not wittingly accept.
