After missing last season due to injury, Nicole Payne scored her first professional goal in her third game back for Orlando, leading the Pride to a 1-0 victory over the San Diego Wave on Sunday night in San Diego.<\/p>\n

In first-half stoppage time, midfielder Payne\u2019s pinpoint shot from outside the box provided Orlando the 1-0 lead it would never relinquish in improving to 4-5-2 and 14 points for eighth place in the NWSL standings. The Wave fell to 7-4-1 (22 points) at Snapdragon Stadium and dropped from second to third in the league table.<\/p>\n

Payne was making her first start for Orlando in just her third appearance. Payne is working into form since returning from a torn ACL that forced her to miss the entire 2025 season.<\/p>\n

\u201cIncredible game,\u201d said Orlando coach Seb Hines. \u201cGreat effort, as well, from start to finish. Thought we managed the game really well and brought a little bit more intensity within our press.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were a lot calmer on the ball, as well. We talked about it before the game and getting back to who we are as an Orlando Pride team and it was on full display here tonight in San Diego.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also making her first start of the season for Orlando was Luana. The attacking midfielder was inserted into the lineup in place of Angelina, who picked up a red card in the the loss to Denver and was suspended for Sunday\u2019s match.<\/p>\n

It was Luana who started the sequence that led to Payne\u2019s goal. She gathered the ball in the midfield and sent a long, floating ball toward the Wave\u2019s box that deflected off a defender. Payne reacted quickest to the loose ball. The former USC Trojan took the strike and buried it into the corner of the net.<\/p>\n

Anna Moorhouse made five saves, including a double save in the 33rd minute, for her fourth clean sheet of the season for the Pride.<\/p>\n

The victory came at the end of a three-match road trip for Orlando. The Pride lost the first two matches to expansion sides Boston and Denver and had lost four of five entering Sunday\u2019s contest. The victory improved Orlando\u2019s all-time record against the Wave to 5-1-2 \u2014 and the Pride is unbeaten in San Diego.<\/p>\n

Defender Rafaelle returned to the starting lineup from injury for the Pride. She replaced Hannah Anderson at centerback.<\/p>\n

The Orlando defense held and thwarted San Diego late to preserve the victory, despite constant pressure from the Wave.<\/p>\n

In the 87th minute, the Wave controlled possession before Kristen McNabb sent a ball into the box that Gabi Portilho headed toward the left side of the goal, but Moorhouse managed to get her fingertips on it. The save pushed the ball out of bounds, and her teammates immediately ran over to celebrate the stop with her.<\/p>\n

The Wave fired four shots over the final seven minutes of stoppage time, but a Pride player either blocked or deflected each attempt, preventing Moorhouse from facing any real danger.<\/p>\n

Orlando returns home to face Bay FC on Friday before the World Cup break. After the break, the Pride will return to action July 3 in Los Angeles at Angel City FC and will play their first home match July 10 against the Kansas City Current.<\/p>\n
