A legendary\u00a0Miami\u00a0graffiti artist known for tagging overhead signs on\u00a0Interstate 95\u00a0was killed on\u00a0May 13\u00a0by an oncoming Brightline train.<\/p>\n

Eric Alan Hirt, 47, was struck and killed at\u00a012:26 a.m. while walking on the tracks in Biscayne Park, Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office Detective Joseph Peguero Rivera said in an email. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner\u2019s Office confirmed that the train was a Brightline. The office is still investigating. Brightline officials declined to comment.<\/p>\n

Known as \u201cEson,\u201d Hirt was a member of the MSG Crew, or Miami Style Gods, a group of street graffiti artists that formed in the 1990s. Hirt \u2014 with crew founder Crome \u2014 appeared in a\u00a02018 documentary\u00a0by Vice, \u201cThe Last Vandals,\u201d recounting their daring vandalism missions, with police at their heels, and reflecting on how graffiti became culturally acceptable and commercially embraced, in Wynwood.<\/p>\n

Video footage in the film shows him climbing across metal scaffolding to \u201cbomb\u201d a street sign hanging over\u00a0I-95, emblazoning it with his name.<\/p>\n

\u201cGraffiti to me is like a sickness,\u201d he said in the film. \u201cI can\u2019t drive down the street without wanting to hit every curb, pole, sign, wall. It\u2019s just programmed in my head.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was revered in the graffiti world.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we mourn the loss of our brother ESON, a true king of the highways, but also a friend and a father,\u201d the MSGCrew account posted on Instagram. \u201cWe will forever keep his name alive. Paint the heavens man, see you when we get there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hirt\u2019s death was at least the 206th Brightline fatality since it started test runs in 2017, and the ninth death this year. Deaths and injuries this year are down compared to last year, when 13 people had died by mid-May.<\/p>\n

Hirt\u2019s wife of 26 years,\u00a0Shawn Hirt, told the Herald he often crossed the unfenced tracks behind their house on Northeast 11th Place. He was partially deaf, it was dark, and it\u2019s a \u201cquiet zone\u201d with no train horn, she said. Police told her the Brightline was traveling at 79 miles an hour.<\/p>\n

Police viewed footage from the Brightline cab, and Hirt said they told her he was carrying something and looked up at the last second with a \u201cdeer in the headlights\u201d expression. She said it was an accident.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re devastated,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand why there\u2019s not a lot more safety features,\u201d she added. \u201cHow many people have to die?\u201d<\/p>\n

A\u00a0GoFundMe\u00a0was set up to raise money for his two daughters, who are 15 and 18. He was also the primary caregiver for his mother,\u00a0Shawn Hirt\u00a0told the Herald. The\u00a0Miami-born Hirt was an electrician by trade, his death certificate says.<\/p>\n

Hirt said her husband had lived in the home for 35 years. The tracks, also used by\u00a0FEC\u00a0freight trains, run along a residential neighborhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time the train passes by, it\u2019s a reminder,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a constant reminder of what we lost.\u201d<\/p>\n
