Bulbs:<\/strong> Achimenes, African iris, agapanthus, amaryllis, blackberry lily, bulbine, caladiums, canna, crinum, crocosmia, day lily, eucharis lily, gladiolus, gloriosa lily, peacock ginger, society garlic, rain lily and walking iris.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Lawn care<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u00a07.<\/strong> Lawn feeding time is over in many areas of the state; check the rules in your county.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a08.<\/strong> Weeds are also making good growth; spot killing with a product for your turf type is best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a09.<\/strong> Delay weed control treatments until you can water or the rains return.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10.<\/strong> If you skipped a spring feeding the next fertilizer application is in October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>11.<\/strong> Yellow lawns can often be regreened with an iron-only application where permitted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>12.<\/strong> Try to keep your lawn moist on watering days in your area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>13.<\/strong> Some soils resist water penetration; try a wetting agent to help moisten the soil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>14.<\/strong> Fill bare areas or start new lawns with seed, plugs or sod for the grass type desired.<\/p>\n<p><strong>15.<\/strong> Avoid sodding shady areas during summer to prevent rot problems caused by the wet weather.<\/p>\n<p><strong>16.<\/strong> Water only as needed to establish new lawns; excess water causes lawns to decline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>17.<\/strong> Adjust and replace sprinklers to only water the lawn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>18.<\/strong> Track the water lawns receive; up to \u00be inch is normally adequate at each watering or rainfall<\/p>\n<p><strong>19.<\/strong> In spite of the cool winter chinch bugs are feeding in Augustine lawns; treat when noticed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>20.<\/strong> Sod webworms are likely to arrive this month; only control if damage is severe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>21<\/strong>. Moths do not mean sod webworms are feedings; wait until chewing damage is noted to treat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22.<\/strong> Maintain the lawn at one height; learn the proper height for your lawn type.<\/p>\n<p><strong>23.<\/strong> Sharpen the mower blade after a few weeks of continuous use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>24.<\/strong> Mow a different direction each time the lawn is cut to avoid ruts in the turf.<\/p>\n<p><strong>25.<\/strong> Aerate and immediately water lawns that are compacted, hard to wet or have nematode problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>26.<\/strong> Replace constantly declining turf in dense shade with mulch or a ground cover.<\/p>\n<h4>Landscape chores<\/h4>\n<p><strong>27.<\/strong> Many plants that appear dead are making new growth from their base.<\/p>\n<p><strong>28.<\/strong> Prune out the dead from winter-damaged shrubs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>29.<\/strong> Obtain durable color for summer from bush daisy, caladium, coleus, pentas and zinnias.<\/p>\n<p><strong>30.<\/strong> During hot weather new plants may need daily watering for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>31.<\/strong> Wet the root balls before adding new plants to the landscape<\/p>\n<p><strong>32.<\/strong> Tropical bromeliads, orchids, spathiphyllum, aluminum plants and dracaena like shady sites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>33.<\/strong> Remove old soil from containers and improve beds with organic matter before planting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>34.<\/strong> Groom perennials, roses and spring-flowering shrubs to remove declining flowers and stems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>35.<\/strong> Don\u2019t pass up gingers, rain lilies, crinum lilies and black berry lilies for summer color.<\/p>\n<p><strong>36.<\/strong> Hurricane season begins June 1; contract worker seeks class-action compensation<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>38.<\/strong> Don\u2019t let weeds grow out of control; remove by hand or spot kill with herbicides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>39.<\/strong> Complete azalea pruning by month\u2019s end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>40.<\/strong> Groom roses to remove old flowers and twiggy stems:\u00a0 feed monthly and control black spot.<\/p>\n<p><strong>41.<\/strong> Give camellias and gardenias the care they need; water, fertilizer, mulch and scale insect control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>42.<\/strong> Trim back poinsettias 4 to 6 inches after a foot of new growth to keep them compact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>43.<\/strong> Established plants usually do not need watering during the rainy season<\/p>\n<p><strong>44.<\/strong> Consider adding rain barrels or cisterns to capture and store water for dry times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>45.<\/strong> Hot summer days make it difficult to transplant trees and shrubs; wait until cooler weather.<\/p>\n<p><strong>46.<\/strong> Root cuttings of shrubs and foliage plants to grow more plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>47.<\/strong> Feed shrubs and palms with a slow-release fertilizer where permitted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>48.<\/strong> Feeding plants in containers is permitted in most areas; use a slow-release fertilizer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>49.<\/strong> Divide orchids and bromeliads outgrowing their containers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>50.<\/strong> Feed orchids every other week with a liquid or use a slow-release fertilizer as labeled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>51.<\/strong> Orchids and bromeliads grow best in the shade of a tree; water frequently when hot and dry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>52.<\/strong> Feed lilies and other aquatic plants in home water gardens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>53.<\/strong> Trim formal hedges after they produce 4 to 6 inches of new growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>54.<\/strong> Groom hanging baskets by removing old flowers and lanky shoots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>55.<\/strong> Clean and refill bird baths as needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>56.<\/strong> Remove sprouts from the base of crape myrtle, maple and similar trees.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Fruit and vegetable care<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>57.<\/strong> Keep vegetable plantings moist and fertilize to continue harvests into summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>58.<\/strong> Make fertilizer applications every 3 to 4 weeks or use as slow-release product as instructed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>59.<\/strong> Check planting lists to see what your family likes for summer planting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>60.<\/strong> Mail order seed companies often offer special deals as they close out their spring season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>61.<\/strong> Obtain the seeds you need now for summer and fall planting; store in the refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>62.<\/strong> Many herbs can survive the summer if kept in light shade, moist but not wet and fertilized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>63.<\/strong> Continue cutting and using herbs to keep the plants productive; preserve extras.<\/p>\n<p><strong>64.<\/strong> When gardens will not receive summer plantings consider soil solarization to bake out pests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>65.<\/strong> Sweet potatoes are easy to grow: start transplants from a spouting grocery store root.<\/p>\n<p><strong>66.<\/strong> Keep weeds in and near the garden under control to prevent pest problems for fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>67.<\/strong> Continue to add fruit trees, shrubs and vines from containers to the landscape.<\/p>\n<p><strong>68.<\/strong> Learn the pests of your new fruits and decide if you need a control plan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>69.<\/strong> Reshape blueberry shrubs and hedges and prune blackberries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>70.<\/strong> Feed bananas monthly; harvest stalks when the first hand formed begins to yellow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>71.<\/strong> Feed pineapples with a slow-release fertilizer following label instructions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>72.<\/strong> Give citrus trees the best care possible to avoid the greening disease.<\/p>\n<h4>Foliage and houseplant<\/h4>\n<p><strong>73.<\/strong> Find a spot in the sunny garden for Easter lilies; plants gradually decline and regrow in\u00a0 winter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>74.<\/strong> Forced tulip, daffodils and similar cool climate flowers are best tossed, but keep the pots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>75.<\/strong> Give declining foliage plants a rest outdoors in the shade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>76.<\/strong> Repot plants needing a new container.<\/p>\n<p><strong>77.<\/strong> Feed plants outdoors every two weeks and indoors monthly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>78.<\/strong> Use a slow-release fertilizer as instructed to stretch the time between feedings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>79.<\/strong> Wash away insects with soapy water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>80.<\/strong> Remove declining leaves, stems and blooms;
