The ride opened in May 2025, only to start refurbishment about 11 months later. With the changes came an expanded name: Expedition Odyssey: Fire & Ice.

SeaWorld touts it as “all new,” which is stretching it since the mechanics have stayed the same. But the look is significantly different, starting in the queue.

The OG Expedition Odyssey featured a very gray, very boxy holding area with large animal photos. EO 2.0 breaks up the up-and-back line with desks and monitors, a sort of research area. There are large screens high up displaying data and fiery imagery, and the animal pictures have also been upgraded.

Additional props are more industrial, emitting a behind-the-scenes vibe. There’s a lot to look at, to the point that you might think there are Easter eggs tucked in there. (Hmmmm. “J.P.” on the schedule sure could line up with park president Jon Peterson, no?)

Riders are divided into groups of 15 and taken into a small room for a themed safety spiel introducing AERIS (Arctic Environmental Research and Integrated Sciences) and the imaginary ride vehicle, dubbed EO-X4 Quadcopter.

Each set of riders is directed to side-by-side seats on a long bench with seat belts. That contraption pivots into darkness, which is part of the storyline ahead of taking off in the Quadcopter. There’s a dramatic pause that prompted a fellow rider to say, “What is this?!” The legs of passengers are dangling at this point, and I got that “Is this supposed to do this?” feeling.

Short answer: Yes. Later, I watched a YouTube video that showed additional screen time from the safety guide in the loading area, briefing folks on the process, but I did not see that in real life.

The film starts, and passengers face a giant domed screen. The action starts at a snowy base camp (ice) and moves through other scenes featuring lava (fire). The scenes are mostly from above — we are even higher than a plane at some points. Other forms of transportation, including boats and a dog sled, are visible, which helps with the perception of size.

The Fire & Ice version features a new film with fly-bys of volcanoes, tundra, icebergs, waterfalls and towards the northern lights before heading back to base.

There’s also a virtual dive into a hole in the ice, and every time I’ve been on Expedition Odyssey, a passenger screams fearfully as we submerge. I guess the effect is that strong, but the attraction is designed to be family-friendly, so don’t freak out. (The ride’s height requirement is 39 inches.)

Read more Cold front moving southward brings isolated morning showers and storms

I’ve seen online criticism of the sudden cuts between scenes (Epcot’s Soarin’ Across America gets similar heat), and some people wish that the visuals were strung together as a “realistic” experience. Given the variety of scenes, that feels like a big ask for a film that’s about seven minutes long.

More than anything, Expedition Odyssey: Fire & Ice passes the exit test. The halls, filled with excited recaps of the experience, lead to real-life exposure to walruses, beluga whales and penguins.

Blockbuster exhibit

Movie buffs will find a lot to like and look at in the “Spielberg Summer Blockbusters” exhibit, now open at Universal Studios Florida theme park. The space, in the Hollywood section of the park, presents fun factoids about filmmaker Steven Spielberg, surrounded by movie props and memorabilia. It starts with “Jaws,” which causes a foot traffic jam, and proceeds to “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” where the alien’s mechanical arm is displayed. (No finger touching; it’s behind glass.)

That’s followed by “Jurassic World” stuff and promotion for Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day,” which arrives in theaters on June 12.

Elsewhere in the park are more “Jaws” experiences, focusing on walk-in photo ops, one of which appears to be a re-enactment of the Jaws ride vehicles that shut down in 2012. Also fun are clusters of reimagined “Jaws” movie posters (psychedelic, Hello Kitty-esque styles, for example).

News and notes

• Orlando Auto Museum, an attraction within Dezerland Park on International Drive, has added the “Dezer’s First Love” exhibit. It presents multiple 1949 Plymouth models, the car that began the automobile-collecting passion of owner Michael Dezer.
