CBS News fired longtime \u201c60 Minutes\u201d correspondent Scott Pelley on Tuesday, a day after he reportedly said Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss was \u201cmurdering the show\u201d and accused its new producer of having \u201cslender qualifications\u201d for the job.<\/p>\n

The move deepened the turmoil at the nation\u2019s most influential TV news program, days after a leadership overhaul.<\/p>\n

Pelley, 68, criticized management Monday during a fiery staff meeting with Nick Bilton, the program\u2019s new executive producer installed by Weiss last week, according to a detailed report on the Status website.<\/p>\n

In a termination notice obtained Tuesday night by The Associated Press, Bilton, a technology journalist and filmmaker with no traditional broadcast news experience, accused Pelley of carrying out an \u201cambush\u201d against him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYesterday, you hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt,\u201d the letter states.<\/p>\n

Pelley said in a statement that \u201c60 Minutes\u201d has lost its DNA under new management. He accused them of asking him to \u201cinject falsehoods and bias\u201d into his work, without sharing specific details.<\/p>\n

Pelley is accused of a \u2018performative display of hostility\u2019<\/h4>\n

Status, which said it had a recording of the Monday meeting, reported that Pelley had said Weiss was brought in to kill the news outlet, \u201cand she\u2019s doing exactly that.\u201d Weiss was not present for the meeting.<\/p>\n

Pelley reportedly grilled Bilton about the firings last week of Bilton\u2019s predecessor, Tanya Simon, and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega.<\/p>\n

Alfonsi had criticized Weiss last year for postponing a segment about deportees sent to the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador as part of President Donald Trump\u2019s immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n

Pelley said in his statement that those colleagues \u201cstood for fairness against the forces of political bias.\u201d He also accused CEO David Ellison of casting aside the show\u2019s reputation \u201capparently to curry a moment of favor with the Trump administration.\u201d Ellison, an ally of the Republican president, has owned CBS since 2025, when its parent company, Paramount, merged with Skydance Media.<\/p>\n

In the dismissal letter Tuesday, Bilton said Pelley\u2019s \u201cperformative display of hostility\u201d demonstrated that he has \u201cno interest in contributing to the future success of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

An uneasy stretch for CBS News<\/h4>\n

Since Weiss took over the network\u2019s news operation last October, it has traveled a bumpy road.<\/p>\n

Pelley\u2019s termination came just five days after Weiss, who has become a polarizing figure in the media world since taking the reins, told staff in a memo that it was time for a \u201cnew approach\u201d at the top-rated newsmagazine.<\/p>\n

In the memo, Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski said their goal for \u201c60 Minutes\u201d was \u201cbuilding a show that thrives in the 21st century.\u201d That could include extending the show beyond a 60-minute broadcast, they said.<\/p>\n

\u201c60 Minutes\u201d first aired in 1968 and is the longest-running prime-time show in TV history. Its investigative journalism and probing interviews, sometimes with unwilling subjects, have given it the reputation of uncompromising journalism \u2014 precisely the trait that Pelley said he feared was under assault.<\/p>\n

Pelley started working for CBS in 1989. He was its chief White House Correspondent from 1997 to 1999, during Bill Clinton\u2019s presidency, and anchored \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d from 2011 to 2017. He has won 51 Emmy Awards, according to his CBS bio.<\/p>\n
