When the 62-year-old owner of one of Orlando’s signature venues was picked up by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in early May, waves of grief, shock and fury spread through the music scene and spilled onto front pages and social -media accounts. Many told stories of Williams’ generosity, opening the stage of the cramped bar on Mills known as Uncle Lou’s Entertainment Hall to anyone who wanted to play.

“He would let literally anyone book a show there, and he never took a cent from the bands. If you get a good punk band and about 50 people in there, it was a hell of a time,” said one poster on the massive internet forum Reddit. “Playing Uncle Lou’s is an enormous rite of passage for just about anyone in the Central Florida music scenes.”

“Noooo this is terrible news. He embraced us back in the early-mid 2000s and I had some of my most cherished Orlando memories at Uncle Lou’s. Such a special human,” another mourned.

Almost immediately, local officials rallied to Williams’ defense, including state Rep. Anna V. Eskamani and congressmen Maxwell Alejandro Frost and Darren Soto. Money poured into a GoFundMe account. Pledges of support piled up. But a message posted earlier this week by Williams’ attorney reflected a decision that many in similar straits have made over the past few years: By “self-deporting,” he might preserve a chance to someday return to the community where he’d spent half his lifetime and poured so much into. He will leave behind an investment of money and hard work.

A tide of injustice

Yes, this one hurts, because “Uncle Lou” had access to resources many local immigrants lack, and still couldn’t see a way to hold on. It hurts because it is just one well-known case among hundreds in Central Florida. The state calls it “Operation Tidal Wave” and that’s appropriate: State and federal officials have created a tsunami of suffering, detainees whose stories have received no real attention outside the people who know them and miss them. It’s not hard to imagine how terrified, isolated and broken those people feel — or how it must be for their families and friends when they are whisked away to unknown locations to maximize their isolation.

Many of the people being targeted arrived legally on temporary visas, visiting family or recruited to work jobs American citizens didn’t want — and then staying on when their visas expired. Others came seeking refuge from oppressive regimes that treat women like cattle, and countries under the dominion of drug cartels where young people are claimed and corrupted before they have a chance to reach adulthood. They were told they were welcome. Now that welcome has been abruptly withdrawn, and they are being told they must go home to places like Haiti, which currently has almost no functioning government.

Theoretically, people in this category have the right to seek permanent asylum here, along with others who want to relocate to the United States legally. This week, the Trump administration said almost all of the applicants for long-term residency must return to their home countries while their cases are progressing. Officials then tried to walk that statement back, but it’s already becoming clear that very few “green cards” are being issued at all, even for people who were almost at the end of their lengthy wait.

Everyone suffers

But the cruelty reaches beyond immigrants and their families. In a place like Orlando, it’s a strike to the heart of a community.

Read more The 10 best Father’s Day gifts for the father figure in your life

While Americans may say they want tougher immigration enforcement, that resistance often melts when they encounter immigrants face-to-face. While the administration spins the myth of vicious criminals victimizing American citizens, the past months have revealed the truth. Immigrants, regardless of status, provide significant benefits to our community.

Today in Central Florida, there is probably more than one nursing-home resident wondering what happened to the aide with the musical voice who would stop by and brush her hair for five minutes of treasured human contact. There are commuters, noting that the young man at the corner convenience store— who doled up fresh-pressed juice with a brilliant smile — is no longer there. There are homebuilders and farmers confronted with economic meltdown because they can’t find the workers they need. And there are definitely daughters and sons whose days are dimmed by the ever-constant worry about their parents, exiled back to a country they barely remember with no job, no home, no resources or connections.

As these people disappear from the local landscape, each leaves a gap that will be nearly impossible to fill.

Shame and loss

So much pain. And for what? So politicians can pander to a xenophobic minority in their quest to hold onto power.

Eventually, the memory of Williams may fade. But the loss of so many — the burden of injustice being dealt in our great nation’s name — will linger. This one hurts. They all do.

Uncle Lou welcomed anyone who wanted to share their music with others, and he was loved for that. Even after he leaves, that legacy will live on – along with the memories of those who came here in search of a place where they could work hard and thrive.

The Orlando Sentinel Editorial Board consists of Opinion Editor Krys Fluker, Executive Editor Roger Simmons and Viewpoints Editor Jay Reddick.
