{"id":3865,"date":"2026-06-12T17:04:32","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T17:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orlandorelocationreport.com\/?p=3865"},"modified":"2026-06-12T17:04:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T17:04:32","slug":"mayor-demings-will-reconvene-tourist-tax-task-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orlandorelocationreport.com\/?p=3865","title":{"rendered":"Mayor Demings will reconvene tourist-tax task force"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>As tourist-tax revenue soars to new heights, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings set a timetable this week for reassembling a task force he created three years ago to guide spending the tax bounty generated by record-setting numbers of visitors to Central Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/orlandorelocationreport.com\/?p=3863\">Canada is ready to become a soccer nation as it hosts World Cup opener against Bosnia-Herzegovina<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The panel, scheduled to meet four times beginning July 21, will be asked to wrap up their work about two weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am confident that, with citizen input, we can determine the best course of action for investing TDT funds in our community in a manner that benefits both visitors and residents,\u201d Demings said in a letter he dispatched this week to Orange County commissioners.<\/p>\n<p>TDT, an acronym for Orange County\u2019s Tourist Development Tax, is a 6% surcharge on the cost of a hotel room or other short-term lodging option, including a home-sharing rental like Airbnb or VRBO. Tax collections are on pace to exceed for the first time ever $400 million in a fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>Demings said the panel would be made up of new members but spending recommendations still had to comply with Florida law.<\/p>\n<p>That means the tourist-tax largesse can\u2019t help pay for affordable housing projects or improvements to public transit, as some community leaders prefer, but instead must be spent on tourism marketing, expanding the convention center or improving sports and arts venues.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Maxwell: Billions for tourism. Mayor Demings wants to borrow $500M for it\u201d \u2014 Orlando Sentinel\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The mayor will have to select new co-chairs for the task force.<\/p>\n<p>Jane Healy, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial editor from The Orlando Sentinel, who helped lead the 2023 panel, died last month at age 77. Co-chair Tony Jenkins, a Jacksonville native who served two decades as Florida Blue\u2019s market president in Central Florida, was promoted in February to serve as the health insurer\u2019s market president for Northeast Florida, which is based in Duval County.<\/p>\n<p>The task force will include representatives from each of the county\u2019s theme park titans, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld; the Central Florida Hotel &amp; Lodging Association; the Orlando Economic Partnership; organized labor; the Veterans Advisory Council and local chambers of commerce representing International Drive businesses, the LGBTQ+ community and multi-cultural entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n<p>TDT is generally regarded as a reliable gauge of the tourism industry\u2019s health in Central Florida because short-term lodging costs are mostly paid by out-of-town visitors and rising collections signal high visitor volume, strong hotel demand, and a booming travel economy.<\/p>\n<p>Collections for fiscal year 2026, which began Oct. 1, stand at $258.2 million through the first seven months \u2014 about 9.8% or $23 million ahead of last year\u2019s record pace.
