This act robbed families, friends, and a community of loved ones, leaving survivors with a lifetime of recovery ahead. I do not minimize the impossible task of remembering 49 distinct, vibrant and diverse stories in one memorial, nor the challenge presented by a small nightclub whose footprint holds a massive wake of trauma, suffering and mourning.

Read more Z Grills vs. Traeger: Which is better?

There is no single solution that fully captures the deep sense of loss suffered 10 years ago, or the ongoing story of recovery in Orlando today. Our city has willingly taken on the monumental task of honoring each loss. In the aftermath of the Pulse tragedy, a united response made this loss universal, bringing people, community leaders, elders, and our institutions together in a front of love and care. Yet, in the midst of crisis response, many impacted families were alienated from mourning in their own language and according to their own customs. This was not caused by an uncaring community, but by an overwhelming response delivered in a language and through customs different from those on full display at Latin Night.

Today, forging a clear path to healing that balances the needs of all impacted to be seen and heard remains a sacred obligation to remembrance. Attempting to translate into Spanish and accommodate our traditions falls short. Our sacred task now is not one of translation, but one of incarnation, letting the fullness of the 49 be seen, shown, felt and heard. Our challenge is sculpting a stone memorial that fleshes out the stories of people whose chosen family that night was a community both LGBTQ and overwhelmingly Hispanic, dancing together with its allies as one united community.

We must not forget the soundtrack of that night, which defined the lives of those gathered. This is a story of a community that lived joyfully and out loud, dancing to Spanish verse set to Afro-Caribbean rhythms. This is a story of inclusion, a common struggle, and a united response against hate. We must not forget that night mothers and nuestras madres suffered for the loss of their children, hijos, and hijas. This is a story of love and amor. Suffering transcends language and culture but this remembrance cannot be silent nor blind to it.

The City’s work so far should be celebrated, but we must be cautious not to reduce humanity and cultural expression to the proper spelling of a name. When we asked the City how the design of the memorial would reflect our community and the flags of our nations, the response repeatedly returned to the depiction of the names of the victims, noting that multiple surnames and hyphenations would be honored. While these details matter, merely writing a person’s name as spelled is not an accomplishment; getting the pronunciation right should be the goal. A name etched in stone still needs to be properly pronounced in an environment that sets the proper rhythm and context of the story it belongs to. A properly designed space will give the appropriate cues to fully contextualize pronunciation through truth, culture and shared struggle.

Forty-nine lives perished that night. In this attack on our LGBTQ community, 90% of those lives were also Latino, lived or touched by Spanish. Twenty-three of those lives were Puerto Rican, for whom our flag is a second skin. I am certain they proudly flew their flags in their lifetime. Our flags and symbols are not divisive or political; they are an important part of our identity and community. Our story begins with these symbols; it should not be hidden as a footnote. Our flags and languages tell you who we are even before you learn our names.

Read more ‘Getting worse’: State lets Seminole nursing school stay open, despite struggles

The imagery of the nightclub alone does not fully tell the story of an inclusive and accepting dance floor. That night, a beautiful diversity of people (gay, straight, Latino, white, Black, and other allies) shared the space. The rhythms were Afro-Latino, the songs were in Spanish, and experts danced salsa next to friends struggling to keep up.

A reflecting pool and a row of columns alone do not tell visitors who gathered here or why. A memorial design must be functional, and functional memory in this case means a complete story where Spanish is the rhythm of the main narrative. Functional memory must do more than reflect a silhouette of grief; it must preserve the acoustic and cultural architecture of the lives lived there. To build with this mindset is to ensure that the design itself speaks, preventing the passage of time from quietly rewriting a deeply specific history into a generic tragedy. This truth does not exclude but provides for a complete remembrance where one community in its diversity is seen and heard. It is time to actively engage the oral histories and traditions of our community and the vast majority of those who gathered there that night.

The city has said the design is not finalized and will consider feedback. The city must remember that those who perished yearned to be seen and included. In turn, their community is communicating how to best honor our shared humanity as members of Central Florida’s Hispanic community.

Construction is set to begin in September. This final phase is our opportunity to ensure this sacred story is fully and beautifully told. I have watched this city work with real devotion, and I know we can finish the way it started: by honoring every name, reclaiming the joy of the dance floor, and carrying the whole truth of who they were into a future built on healing and unconditional love.

The Rev.
