Ten years ago, Orlando was already reeling from a weekend of horror, the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub that left 49 dead, which happened one night after the shooting death of singer Christina Grimmie at a concert.<\/p>\n

And then on Tuesday, tragedy struck again when an alligator snatched 2-year-old Lane Graves who was playing on the beach at Walt Disney World\u2019s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, dragging the boy into the Seven Seas Lagoon.<\/p>\n

Despite father Matt Graves\u2019 attempts to save his child, the gator pulled Lane into the water where he died. The June 14, 2016 attack was witnessed by dozens of other guests as well as Lane\u2019s mother Melissa and 4-year-old sister Ella. The family had been visiting Disney on vacation from Nebraska.<\/p>\n

Lane\u2019s body was not recovered for another 16 hours. A medical examiner\u2019s report stated the boy died of a traumatic neck injury and drowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cMelissa and I are broken,\u201d Matt Graves said in a statement released to the media after the attack. \u201cWe will forever struggle to comprehend why this happened to our sweet baby, Lane. As each day passes, the pain gets worse, but we truly appreciate the outpouring of sympathy and warm sentiments we have received from around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the tragedy, Disney has posted warning signs about alligators and snakes in the lagoon and built up a rock walls and fencing along its beachfront resorts.<\/p>\n

The Graves family turned their grief into charitable efforts, creating the nonprofit Lane Thomas Foundation, which supports families of children who need life-saving organ transplants.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe foundation was named Lane Thomas because if Lane was ever asked his name, he would say, \u2018I\u2019m Lane Thomas, I\u2019m two\u2019,\u201d reads a statement on the foundation\u2019s website. \u201cLane was a beaming, spirited and loving child who cared for his family deeply \u2014 creating The Lane Thomas Foundation is the best way to pass on the legacy he left on this world.\u201d<\/p>\n
