Osceola County is moving forward with two projects to widen Canoe Creek Road and begin the Sunbridge Parkway Extension project, both of which aim to ease traffic in the county\u2019s most congested and fast growing areas.<\/p>\n

The Osceola Board of Commissioners approved the two road projects unanimously at its Monday meeting. They are part of the county\u2019s $2 billion road improvement plan, but have yet to be fully funded for construction.<\/p>\n

Residents have long called for improvements on Canoe Creek Road, but homeowners along the road are concerned portions of their property will be taken via eminent domain as the nearly $157 million road widening project begins.<\/p>\n

Three residents asked commissioners for special modifications to the design of the road widening in order to protect their land.<\/p>\n

Marjorie Fitton, who lives along Canoe Creek Road, said she learned last week that the county was looking to take 15 to 20 feet of her front yard.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever in my wildest dreams did I ever think this would happen,\u201d Fitton said during the meeting.<\/p>\n

She asked commissioners to consider adjusting the project to have smaller grass medians, currently slated to be 16 feet, and to eliminate the proposed 12-feet wide sidewalks along her property and her neighbor\u2019s property to avoid taking land and their trees.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow you\u2019re going to take all the trees in front of [my neighbor\u2019s] property and you\u2019re going to take several trees in front of ours, and others are going to be so close to this road that we\u2019re probably going to lose those too,\u201d Fitton said. \u201cBoth of us have wells in our front yards that will be very close to this road that, with not only the construction but also the sod trucks and dump trucks, it\u2019ll probably ruin our wells.\u201d<\/p>\n

Commissioners discussed shrinking the width of the proposed sidewalk.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a unique area,\u201d Commissioner Ricky Booth said. \u201cThere\u2019s no reason to cut down 60-year-old, 70-year-old or 80-year old trees.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Commissioner Cheryl Grieb argued they couldn\u2019t eliminate the sidewalk all together because it was necessary for future developments.<\/p>\n

In the end, commissioners agreed to salvage as many trees as possible and gave city staff direction to look at how to redesign the project in that area.<\/p>\n

Canoe Creek Road will be widened in two segments, the first an over-4-mile stretch from Deer Run Road to U.S. 192 and the second from Southport Connector Expressway to Deer Run Road. The first segment has already been approved and the second was approved Monday, paving the way for the entire stretch of road to be widened.<\/p>\n

The $255 million Sunbridge Parkway Extension project is a 15-to-20-mile, four-lane roadway from US 192 to Nova Road. It will add a second north-south connection into booming St. Cloud and aims to alleviate congestion on Narcoossee Road, one of the busiest routes in Central Florida.<\/p>\n

The roadway will serve as the only direct connection between two massive developments: the 27,000-acre planned Sunbridge community that crosses Osceola and Orange County lines, which will build over 7,000 residential units, and Harmony West, a 280-acre planned community with 2,000 homes.<\/p>\n

The project will include three roundabouts along Old Melbourne Highway and its intersections with Botanic Boulevard, Bronco Drive and Sunbridge Parkway. It will add a signalized intersection at Nova Road and wildlife crossings. Pedestrians can use sidewalks that vary in width from 5 feet to 14 feet wide alongside the new roadway.<\/p>\n
