IRVINE, Calif. (AP) \u2014 Although the cheers are still ringing in the Americans\u2019 ears after their impressive World Cup-opening victory, this U.S. team says it\u2019s prepared for the physical and mental challenges of the weeks ahead \u2014 including what\u2019s likely to be a physical meeting with Australia on Friday.<\/p>

Midfielder Sebastian Berhalter gives credit for this tenacity to coach Mauricio Pochettino, who has taken over a team that repeatedly flopped on the international stage and infused it with a stronger mentality grounded in a few core beliefs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think one is that we\u2019re American. We don\u2019t take s\u2014-,\u201d Berhalter said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that\u2019s something that (Pochettino) really put in,\u201d Berhalter continued. \u201cEven though he\u2019s Argentinian, he has that mindset of, like, \u2018Look, this is what we do, and this is who we are, and this is what America is about.\u2019 So I think he just, you know, even from an outside perspective, he showed us Americans what we\u2019re about. He really drilled that into us, and I think that\u2019s something that has helped us this last cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n
