Former child star Daveigh Chase, who voiced Lilo in Disney\u2019s beloved \u201cLilo & Stitch\u201d and starred in \u201cThe Ring,\u201d has died. She was 35.<\/p>\n

Chase died Tuesday following a battle with meningitis and a blood infection, after having been hospitalized earlier this month for malnutrition, her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, told TMZ.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear whether Chase ever ended up leaving the hospital or how she contracted meningitis, an infection that causes inflammation of the fluid and membranes around the brain and spinal cord.<\/p>\n

Chase made her television debut in a 1998 episode of \u201cSabrina the Teenage Witch,\u201d and first appeared on the big screen in \u201cHer Married Lover\u201d the following year.<\/p>\n

In 2000, Chase appeared in episodes of multiple hits like \u201cCharmed,\u201d \u201cThe Practice,\u201d and \u201cER.\u201d<\/p>\n

The early aughts were key for Chase\u2019s career. In 2001, she played Samantha in \u201cDonnie Darko\u201d \u2014 a role she reprised in 2009\u2019s \u201cS. Darko\u201d \u2014 and voiced Chihiro and Sen for the English dubbing of \u201cSpirited Away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chase broke out in 2002 when she voiced Lilo in \u201cLilo & Stitch,\u201d and played the villain, Samara, in \u201cThe Ring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chase reprised the role of Lilo across video games as well as spin-offs of the animated hit, including \u201cLilo & Stitch: The Series\u201d \u2014 which aired from 2003 to 2006 \u2014 as well as \u201cStitch! The Movie,\u201d \u201cLilo & Stitch\u2019s Island of Adventures,\u201d and \u201cLeroy & Stitch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chase played Rhonda Volmer across 32 episodes of HBO\u2019s \u201cBig Love,\u201d from 2006 to 2011, and voiced Betsy in nearly two dozen episodes of \u201cBetsy\u2019s Kindergarten Adventures.\u201d<\/p>\n

She died a decade after her last screen credits in 2016, when she played Shanda in \u201cJack Goes Home\u201d and and Krissy\u00a0 in \u201cAmerican Romance.\u201d Also in 2016, Chase lent her voice to Kiwako Seto in the \u201cLet It Die\u201d video game.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unknown whether Chase suffered from viral meningitis \u2014 the most common type in the U.S. \u2014 or bacterial, though prompt treatment is usually necessary for either form of the disease. The latter type can be fatal or cause long-term brain damage if not treated with antibiotics within days of onset, according to the Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n

Vaccines exist for meningitis, which the World Health Organization says can also be caused by fungi and parasites.<\/p>\n
