ST. PETERSBURG \u2014 In deciding to be cautious in handling two-time All-Star Shane McClanahan\u2019s return to action for the first time since August 2023 by skipping his turn in the rotation, the Rays put some extra work on their relievers by designating Saturday as a bullpen game.<\/p>\n

That turned out to be no problem.<\/p>\n

Five relievers, including recently promoted\u00a0Michael Grove\u00a0in his first big-league action since\u00a0October 2024, combined on an impressive seven-hit outing.<\/p>\n

Add homers by\u00a0Junior Caminero\u00a0\u2014 his fifth in his last three games \u2014 and\u00a0Jonathan Aranda, and a couple good defensive plays, and it was enough for a 4-2 victory over the\u00a0Diamondbacks.<\/p>\n

In rolling to a fourth straight win \u2014 their longest such streak in more than a month \u2014 the Rays also reclaimed first place in the American\u00a0League East\u00a0by percentage points over the Yankees, who have been on top for the last two weeks.<\/p>\n

Cole Sulser\u00a0started for the Rays and worked the first two innings, and Casey Legumina,\u00a0Kevin Kelly\u00a0and\u00a0Bryan Baker\u00a0teamed to cover the final four innings.<\/p>\n

But the standout performer was Grove, who hadn\u2019t pitched in the majors since Game 2 of the 2024 National League Division Series for the\u00a0Dodgers\u00a0vs. the\u00a0Padres.<\/p>\n

Called up Thursday after signing as a free agent in April after recovering from\u00a0March 2025\u00a0shoulder surgery, Grove made a memorable Rays debut \u2014 and was awarded the win for doing so.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

He worked three innings, allowing one hit and striking out four, throwing only 34 pitches.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Diamondbacks\u00a0grabbed an early lead on what should have been an out at the plate.<\/p>\n

Geraldo Perdomo, on second base after a one-out double, raced home trying to score on Corbin Carroll\u2019s single to right.\u00a0Victor Mesa Jr. made a strong throw that catcher\u00a0Hunter Feduccia\u00a0took a step or two toward the first base side of the plate to grab.<\/p>\n

Feduccia got back to the front of the plate with plenty of time but wasn\u2019t positioned properly to make the tag as Perdomo made a swim move and touched the plate with his right hand.<\/p>\n

The Rays got the run right back, however, as Caminero continued his power show with a blast to left. It was Caminero\u2019s sixth homer in his last five games and 21st of the season.<\/p>\n

The Rays took the lead in the fifth with another homer from their suddenly potent hitters.\u00a0Yandy Diaz\u00a0walked with two outs, then Aranda extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games with a two-run homer to center.<\/p>\n

They added a run with some small ball in the sixth. Mesa and\u00a0Chandler Simpson\u00a0\u2014 on his \u201cbobble legs\u201d giveaway day \u2014 each bunted their way on and moved up on a wild pitch. Mesa then scored on a\u00a0Cedric Mullins\u00a0sacrifice fly.<\/p>\n
