{"id":69,"date":"2026-05-11T05:05:49","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T05:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orlandorelocationreport.com\/?p=69"},"modified":"2026-05-11T05:05:49","modified_gmt":"2026-05-11T05:05:49","slug":"inside-floridas-massive-weight-room-overhaul-under-jon-sumrall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orlandorelocationreport.com\/?p=69","title":{"rendered":"Inside Florida\u2019s massive weight room overhaul under Jon Sumrall"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>GAINESVILLE \u2014\u00a0<span>The Gator Football Performance Center is empty and cavernous as Black Sabbath booms over the sound system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/orlandorelocationreport.com\/?p=67\">UCF softball headed to Tallahassee after earning spot in NCAA Tournament<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Pumped and sweaty, <\/span><span>Jesse Ackerman<\/span><span> trains in solitude during UF\u2019s semester break, putting the team\u2019s new weight room through its paces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The retooled 14,000-square foot space is Ackerman\u2019s sanctuary, and the factory where he and boss <\/span><span>Rusty Whitt<\/span><span> will build the Gators. Players will return to the assembly line soon, welcomed by a shiny, state-of-the-art workspace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey\u2019re gonna be really excited,\u201d Whitt, the Gators\u2019 director of player performance, told the Orlando Sentinel. \u201cJust the way this place breathes more \u2026 the visual nature of it. It\u2019s gonna really pop to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen they start seeing the spacing and the organization that we\u2019re going to have, they\u2019re going to be excited about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ackerman, who serves as Whitt\u2019s right-hand man, called the changes \u201csignificant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The massive overhaul is also critical to <\/span><span>coach Jon Sumrall\u2019s rebuild<\/span> of Florida\u2019s football program<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe only limiting thing here, really, with what we have now is our imagination,\u201d Ackerman told the Sentinel. \u201cWe just increased the safety, the space, and we increased the methods we could use with these guys. If you limit the methods, you limit the development of your players.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Coming off a 4-8 finish during<\/span><span> Billy Napier\u2019s final season<\/span><span>, the Gators face an uphill climb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To accelerate Sumrall\u2019s rebuild, Whitt and Ackerman set out to overhaul the training facility after the <\/span><span>April 11 spring game<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have world-class football players here, and now we have a world-class setting for those guys to train in,\u201d Whitt told the Sentinel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Once Sumrall asked Whitt to join him at their third stop together following two-year stints together at Troy (2022-23) and Tulane (2024-25), the<\/span><span> 54-year-old former Green Beret<\/span><span> visited Gainesville to survey his new home.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Whitt immediately identified shortcomings, inefficiencies and potential safety hazards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe previous room was functional,\u201d Whitt said. \u201cDon\u2019t get me wrong: The guys who were here weren\u2019t morons. They were professional strength coaches, okay? But at this level, it\u2019s like racing Top Fuel dragsters \u2014 every mile an hour matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis room had to fit my philosophy down to a \u2018T.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To meet Whitt\u2019s standards, the school installed 32 <\/span><span>power racks from Sorinex<\/span><span> featuring nylon safety straps and wider cages offering more room to operate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An athlete performing squats no longer has to shuffle backward with hundreds of pounds on his shoulders to allow teammates to spot him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBefore we had to do everything outside of the cage,\u201d Ackerman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If an athlete\u2019s muscles fail or the bar slips, the interior straps \u2014 capable of supporting 1,500 pounds \u2014 catch the weight rather than metal spotter arms attached outside the cage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s just a safer surface to drop on,\u201d Whitt said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When bench pressing on the other side of the cage, the wider racks no longer require 250- and 300-pound men to squeeze into confined spaces to spot a teammate. New benches are 12 inches wider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re dealing with really wide-shoulder guys,\u201d Ackerman explained. \u201cYour benches have to be solid all the way on your back. It can\u2019t oscillate. These benches are solid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Workers also removed a 30-yard strip of synthetic turf, measuring 14-feet across, from the center of the room. The space allowed for sprinting and plyometrics, but had become unnecessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The weight room is located at the south end of the team\u2019s 120-yard indoor practice facility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lifting shoes also makes footing an issue, Whitt said. A larger concern was hygiene because the surface collected sweat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/orlandorelocationreport.com\/?p=65\">Daily Horoscope for May 11, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe turf was a bacteria trap,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really hard to keep that stuff clean. When they rolled it up, you could smell three years of funk underneath it. Guys always have abrasions from playing football. You add bacteria with the turf and you\u2019re looking at staph (infections) all kinds of things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The performance center now features flooring made from rubber with a quarter-inch thick skin on top. The surface compresses under the weight of large athletes and coaches standing for hours at a time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt just feels better on your feet,\u201d Whitt said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Heavy weights dropped after power cleans or dead lifts bounce vertically rather than side to side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A safer, more appealing facility puts the Gators on more equal footing, yet much work remains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re the national champions of the offseason right now,\u201d Whitt said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a lot of work to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Gators have already made significant strides under the new regime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Whitt said the 111 Gators gained 722 pounds of lean muscle and lost 610 pounds of fat \u2014 an average difference of 6.6 pounds per player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFat doesn\u2019t fly,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Setting the bar even higher, Whitt aims for similar gains leading up to summer practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Gators\u2019 new digs give them a chance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cNothing\u2019s going to be given to us,\u201d Whitt said. \u201cThese guys aren\u2019t just going to walk in and be excited and all of a sudden start winning. We have to do a lot of work, and this place is going to give us kind of a clean slate to do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Under Napier, the Gators had not only the wrong type of equipment, they also lacked the right leadership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Mark Hocke arrived from Louisiana with Napier<\/span> <span>to oversee the strength program but was replaced after two seasons. Craig Fitzgerald, Hocke\u2019s successor, <\/span><span>left after two months<\/span><span> for Boston College to reunite with his former boss Bill O\u2019Brien.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Napier then elevated 34-year-old Tyler Miles from within. Miles soon hired Ackerman, who served under Will Muschamp from 2012 to 2014 and spent five seasons (2016-2020) as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Atlanta Falcons under Dan Quinn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Having known Whitt for more than a decade, Ackerman stuck around. He embraces the upgrades and philosophical shift, beginning with a revamped schedule installed by Sumrall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>During spring practices, players arrived early for lifting sessions or headed to the field before leaving by 11 a.m. Under Napier, the Gators often lifted early before practicing later in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen you stretch it that day, the likelihood of injury can go up,\u201d Ackerman said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The 2025 Gators sustained numerous significant injuries, leaving the team without key players during critical games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The ultimate indictment occurred during Florida Pro Day. Three-year starting guard Dameon George bench pressed 225 pounds just 12 times, prompting Sumrall to say, \u201cHell, our coaches need to be hitting 12.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These days, Sumrall \u2014 a former linebacker at Kentucky \u2014 lifts with his players and holds his own. Ackerman said the 43-year-old even borrowed his bench last weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s awesome when a coach likes to train,\u201d Ackerman said. \u201cThat\u2019s the buy-in. The guys see it. They like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Gators may return bright-eyed, but they better be ready to grind. A shiny new weight room awaits, ready to test their limits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have to put this to use,\u201d Whitt said. \u201cThe mission hasn\u2019t changed.
