A woman sustained a non-life-threatening injury after she was shot by her brother during a group altercation in Downtown Orlando early Sunday morning, the Orlando Police Department said.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., OPD officers responded to the area of Church Street and Orange Avenue following reports of gunfire, OPD said. After an extensive investigation, it was determined that two groups of individuals became involved in an altercation that escalated into a physical fight.

OPD said a woman involved in the altercation was punched in the face by an individual from the opposing group. The woman’s brother, who was also at the scene, intervened in an attempt to defend her and used a firearm to strike the other individual.

During the confrontation, the firearm accidentally discharged and struck the man’s sister in the foot, OPD said. The woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The responding officers quickly located and detained all involved individuals, OPD said. Following the
preliminary investigation, the involved individuals were released pending the completion of the investigation.

OPD said any applicable charges will be determined based on the final investigative findings.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation, OPD said. No additional information was released to protect the integrity of the investigation,
