Deaveon Brown, 28, of Haines City, was arrested after getting into a fight Friday with another man, Kevin Newhard, near the intersection of Orange Avenue and Central Boulevard.

The altercation ended with Newhard being stabbed and sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Orlando police said. OPD did not say what caused the fight.

Surveillance footage shows the two talking for some time before Brown appears to begin circling Newhard, who pulls out a long fixed-blade knife. As the two continue talking, Newhard throws the knife to the ground before picking it up and throwing it to the ground a second time, the affidavit said.

Brown then picks up the knife, and Newhard begins swinging his belt at Brown before falling backwards to the ground. Brown then charges Newhard as he lays on the ground and starts stabbing him. Brown gets up and begins to walk away as police arrive on scene but is detained, according to the affidavit.

Newhard was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery for his injuries, including a stab wound in the center of his chest and another that damaged his liver. OPD said Monday he is expected to survive.

Brown was arrested on charges including attempted first-degree murder with a weapon, aggravated battery with a weapon and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. He is currently in custody at the Orange County Jail and has a court hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

He has seven previous felony convictions, according to his affidavit. OPD said he had been released from prison just 10 days before the stabbing after serving time for possession of MDMA and had previously served a prison sentence following an armed robbery.
