“Gin and tonic originated in British-occupied India,” says Alex Seagrave, beverage project manager, Walt Disney World Resort.

Seafaring cultures, including the Spanish, caught on, he notes, “but for much of the 20th century, it was viewed as an old-fashioned drink.”

But it wasn’t long before renowned chefs in San Sebastián reimagined the classic into something singular and spectacular.

“They elevated it with premium tonic, fresh botanicals, herbs, spices, plenty of ice and the signature copa de balón (balloon glass), allowing the flavors to fully develop. The result was a refreshing, flavorful cocktail designed for slow sipping, whether on a warm afternoon or alongside a meal.”

It is multisensory, a ritual that aligns with Spain’s relaxed take on time together — long lunches, serene sobremesas.

That’s something cast members at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, in particular at its Michelin Guide-recommended Toledo (a past winner for Best Spanish in the Orlando Sentinel Foodie Awards) and Barcelona Lounge, strive to deliver.

This makes it an ideal choice for observing International Gin & Tonic Day (Oct. 19).

“Inspired by the Spanish approach to gin and tonics, we looked to the flavors featured throughout the restaurant and lounge menu. We found that a blend of London dry gin, saffron, rosemary, orange, and premium tonic created a complex yet refreshing cocktail with balanced botanical, herbal, spice, and earthy notes.”

This is the Gran Gin Tonic. It quickly became the signature serve at Barcelona Lounge. But it’s hardly the only game in town.

Guests here can emulate the innovative chefs of San Sebastián, thanks to the resort’s endless customization options.

“To make the experience more personal, they can choose from a variety of gins from around the world and pair them with premium tonics to create their own perfect combination,” says Seagrave. “One favorite is a juniper-forward gin with elderflower tonic, fresh juniper berries and lemon, offering a bright blend of floral and citrus flavors that is especially refreshing in Florida’s warm climate.”

No matter how it is served, the three elements of the gin-tonic (the “and” gets dropped in Spain) are essential, he says, “Great gin, great tonic and great company.”

Notable: This libation pairs well with a wide range of foods and flavors.

“Whether enjoying time with friends, family or on your own, the aromas and flavors of a great cocktail can help capture a moment and bring those memories back long after the glass is empty,” says Seagrave. “That ability to customize each drink and make it uniquely your own is what makes the experience so enjoyable and memorable.”

Where to get one

The Barcelona Lounge at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort (along with Toledo and the adjacent Dahlia Lounge) is one of the top gin-centric locations for a gin tonic at Walt Disney World — and without the need for park admission. If you’re at Epcot, however, GEO-82’s gin selection is right up there, and barkeeps will be happy to craft yours with care.

At Disney Springs, Jaleo, of course, is tops for this special Spanish sip, and offers three distinct gin-tonics for guests to sample.
