The Oviedo girls volleyball team fund-raised to pay the costs for a tournament trip to Hawaii and made the most of its cross-continental excursion last weekend.

The Lions (12-1) went 7-1 in the three-day Hawaii Island Labor Day Classic — losing only to Eleanor Roosevelt (13-2) of Eastvale, California. That tight 25-21, 26-24 loss came on Thursday after the Lions’ 10-hour flight. Oviedo, ranked No. 2 in Central Florida by MaxPreps, bounced back to go 3-0 Friday and 2-0 Saturday.
The team landed back in Orlando at 7 a.m. Tuesday after traveling more than 13 hours, including the drive from Hilo to the Kona airport and a layover in Phoenix.
“The girls had a great time,” said Oviedo coach Jen Darty — who “crashed” to get some rest before returning to campus that afternoon. “It was a long trip but the experience was definitely worth it. They’re a determined group.”
Seniors Delaney Sloane, Eva Wolm and Autumn Westfall led the Lions; along with sophomore Nora Kretchman and Gabby Travieso. All 15 girls played.
Oviedo plays at backyard rival Hagerty on Tuesday night.

Cross country
Lake Nona junior Arabella Duffel raced to her third win in three outings with a personal best time of 17 minutes, 38.49 seconds at the St. Cloud Invitational.
Only the 2025 Class 4A champion, Madison Muller of Sarasota Riverview, has run faster this season (17:33.1) among state contenders.
Bishop Moore’s girls finished first in the Florida Horse Park Invitational in Ocala. Hornets sophomore Annabella Tomasic, the reigning 3A state champ, placed third individually with an 18:28.31 effort in her first race of the season.
St. Cloud won its invitational boys race, led by senior Luis Rivera who scored his second consecutive win with a career-best 15:43.1 time.
Lake Minneola’s Quentin Thompson ran 15:46.78 for third in the Florida Horse Park Invitational in Ocala.
Hagerty’s boys and girls swept the team titles at the DeLand Invitational. Oviedo’s Levi Mollica ran 16:27.11 to win the boys individual title. Master’s Academy’s Rachel Judy (19:49.05) and Avery Gervais (20:05.30) were second and third in the girls race.
Lake Brantley’s boys and girls both took titles in the Freedom Invitational. Daniel Georgiev was the boys winner at 17:07.1 for Brantley and Patriots senior Avalyn Thompson was the girls champ at 19:10.3.
Bowling
East River’s girls, state champs for the past three seasons, bowled 2,435 to cruise past University (Orlando), Lake Nona and Colonial in a season opening four-way match at Boardwalk Bowl. Olivia Watson rolled a 257 game for the Falcons and reigning Orlando Sentinel Girls Bowler of the Year, Larielle Tharps, had a 248.
The East River boys rolled Baker games of 256 and 255 as part of a winning 2,754 total. Shelby Davis shot a 289 game for the Falcons.
Winter Park’s boys and girls are 3-0 after scoring wins against Bishop Moore (5-1). Adriana Cabezas had a 192 game and Kennedy Lock went 90% in her Baker play rotations for the girls win. Adrian Sibayan rolled a 224 game and his teammates, Evan Coomes, Brayden Auffant and Jameson Hermann went 100% in the Baker series.
Jonathan Vinson-McFarland rolled games of 277 and 246 (523 series) as Lyman improved to 5-0 with a 2,531 team total in a win against Seminole.
Jonathan Madruga bowled a 279 game for Hagerty (4-2) in a 2,587 to 2,326 win against Winter Springs (4-1). Kaleb Jimenez added a 268
Horizon’s Laura Smith scored a 200 game as the Hawks won a season opening girls tri-match against Boone and Freedom.
Page Arnold rolled a 219, Rhulee shot 200 and Mia Santiago bowled 200 and 199 games for Lake Mary (5-0) in two wins.

Andrew Milajecki shot 4-under 30 for Geneva School in a 144-153 win vs. Orangewood at Winter Pines Golf Club. Cooper Lambert carded a 34 for Foundation Academy in a 141-151 win vs. Geneva at Winter Pines.
Bobby Jones Potash and Ryan Jeffers both shot 3-under 33 for Eustis in a 141-150 win against Lake Minneola at Black Bear Golf Club.
Ryan Oats shot 3-under 33 for Lake Mary in a 144-155 win vs. Winter Park at Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes.
St. Cloud’s Arnold Pouncy scored 2-under 34 at Royal St Cloud Golf Links in a 144 victory.
Lake Brantley’s Kenny Kittrell shot 2-under 34 in a 148 win at Mayfair Country Club,
In girls play, The First Academy shot 141 to top Lake Nona’s 148 at Orange Tree Golf Club. Yuhan Wang and Harper Zhai of TFA and Michelle Lu of Nona all scored 2-under 34.
TFA and Montverde Academy both shot 148 for a tie at The Club at Bella Collina. Man (Cynthia) Yang shot 2-under 34 for Montverde and Yuxuan Hou had 34 for TFA.
Michelle Lu shot a 3-under 33 for Lake Nona in a 152-196 win over East River at Wedgefield Golf Club.
Volleyball
Orangewood Christian was 5-0 and ranked No. 5 nationally going into a Wednesday college court match vs. Ocala Trinity Catholic at UF. That marked the first time the Rams had all 13 players with standout senior Isabel Incinelli back in the lineup for that trip to Gainesville. She played for the USA Volleyball U23 team that won the Pan Am Cup in Nicaragua on Sunday.
The First Academy (6-1) rolled to a 26-24, 25-20, 25-22 win against Bishop Moore (3-2). The Royals get a shot at Orangewood at home Thursday.
DeLand (7-0), ranked No. 3 in Central Florida behind Orangewood and Oviedo, won at Seminole (3-3) by scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-18..
Adrienne Willis had 13 kills and 28 assists for Lake Highland Prep (6-1) in a 25-20, 25-21, 24-26, 25-17 win against Timber Creek.
Hagerty (2-1), in its first home match, scored a wild 25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 17-25, 16-14 win against Lake Brantley (5-2). Isabelle Peloso (29 kills, 18 digs); Jenae Maduro-Breedy (23 kills, 16 digs) and Alexis Zimmerman (54 assists, 14 digs) led the Huskies.
Winter Park (4-2), which played at Hagerty on Wednesday, dealt Lake Nona its first loss, 25-16, 25-12, 25-17. Horizon (8-1) then won 25-22, 25-21, 25-20 vs. Lake Nona (5-2).
Kissimmee Gateway (7-1) avenged its loss to St. Cloud (6-2).
Ella Drew Stinson had 14 kills, 23 digs and 2 aces for First Academy-Leesburg (4-4) in a 13-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11 comeback win vs. Real Life Christian.

Tyler Reid galloped for 338 yards on 13 carries and scored four touchdowns to propel national No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas (3-0) of Fort Lauderdale to a 31-24 win against another South Florida football power, Miami Columbus (2-1). Columbus had beaten previous No. 1 Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, 33-28, in Week 2.
Windermere High grad Ryan Erisman won the 800-meter freestyle, 400 individual medley and 200 freestyle in the 2026 Toyota National USA Swimming Championships. The Cal-Berkeley sophomore’s 7:43.53 time in the 800 made him the second-fastest American in the history of that event.
