Investigators said they continue searching for suspects and did not have a motive for the shooting. Five of the eight victims had been treated and released from the hospital, according to police.
“We are asking anyone with information about this incident to come forward and contact the Sanford Police Department,” spokeswoman Nicole Brown said in a press release.
The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. near the city’s Coastline Park, just west of the U.S. Highway 17-92, according to police.
The shooting appeared to be an isolated incident, police said.
Witnesses said the gathering was to celebrate the life of Zi’Erric Wynn, a Seminole High student, who died Sept. 20, 2020 as a result of injuries he sustained during a vehicle crash. Wynn, who was a passenger in the car, was a running back for the school’s football team.

During the event, a shooter or shooters began discharging a firearm, according to police.
Pastor Irma Taylor, of Second Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, in Sanford, said her congregation plans to hold a prayer service on Friday at the park, which is near the intersection of 10th Street and Poplar Avenue.
“We are concerned about the [violent] events happening, not just there but everywhere,” Taylor said Monday. “So it’s important that people come together, to be united.”
