The Florida Gators picked up their 25th commitment in the 2027 recruiting class on Monday when new head coach John Sumrall landed The First Academy cornerback Kamauri ‘Bam’ Whitfield, who committed during a live video ceremony.

“The energy in the building is just different, man,” Whitfield said during the ceremony. “Coach Sumrall is bringing a whole different type of energy in the building and I believe they’re gonna win. They’re gonna win it all. Go Gators.”

The Gators’ 2027 recruiting class is ranked eighth nationally, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.

Whitfield is one of the top defensive backs in Central Florida and ranked No. 4 in the Sentinel’s 2027 Central Florida Super60. He’s a dynamic player with a knack for getting to the ball and he has great hands and ball skills. He will often play both ways for TFA and can be an explosive receiver.

Last season was the breakout season for Whitfield, as he showed his abilities against top-notch receivers as TFA faced a loaded schedule that featured five out-of-state games. He’s not the biggest guy on the field, at 5-10, 185 pounds, but he’s fast, has lightning twitch and can track receivers step-for-step. HIs aggressiveness stands out and he can get bigger pass catchers on the ground.

Whitfield picked Florida over Nebraska and Oregon. TFA coach Jeff Conaway has talked about how things didn’t start off all that easily for Whitfield as a freshman.

“Bam is special because he has had to earn it,” Conaway said earlier this year. “He got real serious as a sophomore. As a freshman, we were about ready to help him go somewhere else. As a sophomore we saw him turn the page and he matured in so many areas.

“He matured spiritually and got baptized and he started making life decisions that were much better. He started making better grades and doing what he’s supposed to be doing in the classroom. And he has certainly matured socially and athletically. He got serious about the weight room. … all of that mixed with the way our coaches have developed his skills, he is obviously turning a lot of heads at the collegiate level.”

Whitfield committed to Tennessee in October of last year, but then decided to back out of the decision four days later.

Whitfield is one of six TFA seniors to have committed to FBS programs this summer. Offensive lineman Reed Ramsier is headed to Auburn, receiver Brian Dillard and safety Jaziah Battle are both committed to USF, while cornerback David Coleman and defensive back JP Furtado have both chosen Bowling Green.
