‘Show Boat’
WHAT: Opera Orlando, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and Bethune-Cookman University team to present Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II’s landmark musical in a semi-staged concert production. The creative leadership reunites members of the team who led the opera company’s wildly successful production of “Treemonisha,” including stage director Roberta Emerson and conductor Everett McCorvey, founder and music director of the American Spiritual Ensemble. The production celebrates the centenary of the show, which debuted Dec. 27, 2027, and changed the course of the American musical forever with its emphasis on plot, three-dimensional characters and serious subject matter. The musical spans four decades, 1887-1927, and explores racial prejudice and the search for lasting love as it follows the lives of those who work on a Mississippi River showboat.

SUBLIME SOUNDS: April 24-25, 2027. The program features Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Nobis Pacem” with a poignant and urgent plea for peace. This concert-lecture features two visiting artists from Studio frische Klänge: a musician who plays the piri, a traditional Korean double-reed wind instrument, and one who plays the gayageum, a traditional Korean zither. Accompanied by a lecture by SfK Artistic Director Su Lee, the program presents traditional Korean jeongak (court music), sanjo (a virtuosic Korean instrumental solo tradition), arrangements of Korean folk songs and selected contemporary works, including Lee’s own composition.
LAVENDER MOONSHINE — TRET FURE: March 20, 2027. A pioneering singer-songwriter whose career has spanned more than 50 years of music, activism and storytelling, Fure creates songs that are heartfelt, thought-provoking and unmistakably authentic as they explore love, identity, social justice and the human experience.

MADAME BUTTERFLY: Oct. 2-4. Puccini’s heartbreaking work finds Cio-Cio San steadfastly awaiting the return of her love, an American naval officer, to Japan. Soprano Yeawon Jun makes her Opera Orlando debut in the title role, joined by tenor Isaac Hurtado as Lt. Pinkerton. Kalena Bovell, the 2024 Sphinx Medal of Excellence recipient and first Black woman to conduct an opera in Canada, also makes her company debut.
THE FLYING DUTCHMAN: Jan. 22-24, 2027. The company’s first Wagner production finds the Dutchman cursed to sail the seas for eternity, permitted ashore once every seven years to find a woman willing to be faithful unto death. Baritone Darren Drone returns to Orlando in the title role, joined by German soprano Johanna Will, making her company debut as Senta. Conductor Geoffrey Loff, assistant to the music director at Komische Oper Berlin, returns to the Opera Orlando podium.
ELIXIR OF LOVE: April 23-25, 2027. Donizetti’s comedy is set on the backlot of a 1960s film studio in Rome. There, aspiring screenwriter Nemorino pursues studio star Adina — with an assist from Dulcamara and his love potion. Making their company debuts are soprano Nola Richardson as Adina and Maria Sensi Sellner as conductor.

SHOW BOAT: May 14-16, 2027, in Steinmetz Hall. Produced in partnership with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and Bethune-Cookman University, this semi-staged concert version reunites the team that led Opera Orlando’s successful “Treemonisha,” namely Roberta Emerson, who will stage direct, and Everett McCorvey, founder and music director of the American Spiritual Ensemble. The story follows 40 years in the lives of performers on a Mississippi River showboat.

A SOLARIA SOLSTICE: Dec. 21, at Orlando Museum of Art, 2416 N. Mills Ave. in Orlando. Inspired by the winter solstice — the longest night of the year — this immersive experience explores themes of light, reflection and renewal through choral music, poetry and quiet reflection.
CREATION: Feb. 14, 2027, in the Dr. Phillips Center’s Pugh Theater. Commissioned primarily by Orlando Sings, this new multimedia oratorio by Jocelyn Hagen reimagines the story of existence through a feminine lens. Choir, instrumental ensemble, poetry, and video projections unfold together, making the visuals part of the score itself, with stars, flowers, light, movement, and human life evolving alongside the sound. Sandra Shafer conducts Harmonia in this world premiere.
THE ATONEMENT: March 5, 2027, at First United Methodist Church, 142 E. Jackson St. in Orlando. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s rarely performed oratorio for six soloists, chorus and orchestra brings the Passion of Christ to life with the sweep, drama and emotional intensity of the great Romantic choral tradition. Weaving Gospel narratives with original poetic text by Alice Parsons, the work will be performed by six soloists, the Orlando Sings Symphonic Chorus and orchestra.
LOVE ENDURES: ALZHEIMER’S STORIES BY ROBERT S. COHEN: June 4, 2027, in the Dr. Phillips Center’s Steinmetz Hall. Apollo, Harmonia, and the Orlando Sings Senior Singers perform songs of love, family and memory, bringing together voices across generations for a reflection on human connection. The program’s second half features the Orlando Sings Symphonic Chorus in Cohen’s “Alzheimer’s Stories,” a work for soloists, chorus and orchestra that gives voice to individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
6th annual Choral Festival
FESTIVAL: May 1, 2027. In a new format, Orlando Sings presents a day of music and community at the Pugh Theater and DeVos Family Room at the Dr. Phillips Center. For the first time, concerts, special performances, interactive experiences, conversation and opportunities to make music yourself take place. The day culminates in Mary Lou Williams’ “Mary Lou’s Mass,” a fusion of jazz, gospel, and sacred tradition performed by the Solaria Singers with a jazz ensemble and dancers.

LABOR DAY JAZZ FESTIVAL COOKOUT: Sept. 7. Four bands will perform.
MARVIN SMITTY SMITH: Sept. 18. Smith performs with an octet and hosts a drum clinic.
JOHN DAVERSA AND TAL COHEN: Sept. 19. Multi-Grammy award-winning trumpeter John Daversa teams with pianist Tal Cohen.
ORANGE ROAD QUARTET: Oct. 25. The ensemble is dedicated to the performance of new works and modern classics.
EARTHTONEZ: Oct. 30. Based in Orlando, Earthtonez Music Collective explores blends of sound and color through experimental/instrumental music while incorporating Top 40 hits as well as original sounds.
ASSEL JEAN-PIERRE TRIO: Nov. 22. Styles include Latin jazz, jazz, world music and Afro as the group plays originals, jazz arrangements of classical pieces such as Beethoven’s “Pathetique” and Michel Camilo’s “Caribe.”
DUKE’S NUTCRACKER: Dec. 19. The Matthew Chacon Jazz Orchestra performs Duke Ellington’s “Nutcracker Suite,” a jazz masterpiece for the holiday season.
MURIEL ANDERSON: Feb. 19, 2027. A renowned guitarist known for her expertise on the 20-string harp-guitar creates uplifting melodies.
MANNY ECHAZABA: April 16, 2027. The jazz musician, saxophonist, woodwind player and composer creates work that contains inspirational lessons of resilience while overcoming life’s hardships.
JOHANNES MANN TRIO WITH DION KERR: April 17, 2027. Mann, a guitarist-composer-producer based in Berlin, Germany, collaborates with multi-instrumentalists and conceptual artist Kerr to create colorful contemporary music.
ARTE TANGO: May 8, 2027. Alex Roitman Tango Ensemble (ARTE) is a Sarasota-based group that performs authentic Argentine tango. This interactive performance will cover a variety of tango styles, from traditional roots to modern jazz arrangements to avant-garde contemporary music, including Piazzolla, Pugliese, Gobbi, Salgán and others.
International Chamber Music Festival
IRRERA BROTHERS: Jan. 15, 2027. The brothers, a piano-and-violin duo, present world premieres of works composed for them by award-winning artists from France, Spain, Portugal, Russia and the U.S.
FULTON CHAMBER PLAYERS: Jan. 16, 2027. This young classical musical hopes to inspire the next generation of musicians.
MONROE CROSSING: Jan. 17, 2027. This Americana ensemble with bluegrass stylings has performed across North America and Europe, combining jazz with its unique style.
EMIKO EDWARDS: Jan. 22, 2027. Described as “dazzling” and “scintillating” by Classical Source, pianist Emiko Edwards is a champion of American classical music — a fusion of jazz, folk and global influences.
MUSE DUO — CUTTING EDGE CHAMBER MUSIC: Jan. 23, 2027. This guitar and piano duo presents traditional classical repertoire, folk song and modern chamber music written expressly for the duo.
CALLISTO: Jan. 29, 2027. Callisto’s sound blends multiple genres with a distinct jazz twist and includes new arrangements of songs by artists such as James Taylor, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and The Beatles.
SARAH HANAHAN JAZZ QUARTET: Jan. 30, 2027. Already hailed by NPR’s “Youngbloods” series as a star in the making, Hanahan has put her name on the map by performing and touring with renowned musicians including Peter Martin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Joe Farnsworth, Ulysses Owens Jr. and the Grammy award-winning Mingus Big Band.

PIERRE BENSUSAN — THE INFINITE GUITAR TOUR: Sept. 21. Bensusan plays a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning — a unique and transparent technique.
ARTHUR LIPNER, MALLET MACHÉ: Feb. 20, 2027. An inspiring mix of music, poetry and comedy by one of the world’s leading vibes/marimba players. Lipner performs repertoire from classical to Brazilian to jazz, interspersed with audience participation and poetry readings from his recently published collection “Vibes in Verse.”
THE WINDUP — A SILENT FILM WITH LIVE MUSIC: Feb. 27, 2027. Jared Engel, a musician, filmmaker, and composer based in New York City, showcases his short film “Day of the Catch,” which tells an absurd yet true story from baseball lore.

FLYING HORSE BIG BAND CONCERTS: Sept. 25, Nov. 15 and Feb. 5, 2027. UCF BANDS PRESENTS STORIES WE SHARE: Oct. 6, in Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, 445 S. Magnolia Ave. in Orlando. The program, featuring the UCF Wind Ensemble and UCF Symphonic Band, celebrates the experiences, traditions and connections that unite us. From the vibrant cultural rhythms of Dennis Llinás’s “La Chancla” and the energetic brilliance of Jan Van der Roost’s “Flashing Winds” to the timeless craftsmanship of Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-flat and the heartfelt lyricism of Nicole Piunno’s “Sunflower Studies,” this concert explores the many ways music reflects our shared humanity.
KNIGHTS SEASON OF JOY: Dec. 1, in Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center, 445 S. Magnolia Ave. in Orlando. The UCF Choirs and members of the UCF Orchestra combine for a festive evening of holiday joy with more than 200 singers onstage.
