Royal Caribbean announced this week that “The SpongeBob Musical” will headline the theatrical entertainment lineup on the cruise line’s forthcoming Hero of the Seas. The production inspired by Tony Award-winning Broadway musical will be seen by cruise passengers when the fourth Icon-class ship sets sail from Miami in August 2027.

The nautical nonsense of Bikini Bottom will come to life with a show that’s adapted and reimagined for the Royal Theater.

“At Royal Caribbean, we’re focused on creating incredible experiences that bring families of all ages together in meaningful, memorable ways,” said Christi Coachman, Royal Caribbean’s vice president of entertainment, in a news release. “Our entertainment lineup on Hero of the Seas is designed with something for everyone. ‘The SpongeBob Musical’ delivers on that by bringing generations together through a story families know and love, while showcasing the creativity, cutting-edge technology and world-class production that can only be experienced on a Royal Caribbean vacation.”

Filled with “unexpected twists, larger-than-life characters, hit songs and friendship,” the musical adventure shows guests that heroes can come from unlikely places as SpongeBob and friends race to save their town from destruction.

Other Icon-class ships have drawn from well-known films and Broadway-style shows for headlining entertainment. “The Wizard of Oz” serves as the main production on Icon of the Seas. Star of the Seas features “Back to the Future: The Musical,” based on the 1985 film and its Broadway adaptation. Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is the main stage show on Legend of the Seas.

On board Hero of the Seas — which is tied with its sisters as the world’s largest cruise ship — guests can explore eight distinct neighborhoods, nine pools, six waterslides, the FlowRider surf simulator, 28 dining venues and new accommodations.

The vessel reached a construction milestone last month after the Meyer Turku Shipyard floated out the massive Hero of the Seas. The build out will continue at the shipyard’s outfitting pier before sea trials and delivery to Royal Caribbean next year.

Seven-night itineraries sailing to the Eastern and Western Caribbean are now available to book for summer 2027 through spring 2028. Visit royalcaribbean.com to learn more.
