The Osceola Magic are in need of a new head coach.
Dylan Murphy, who led Orlando‘s G League affiliate the last three years, is leaving the NBA and heading back to the college ranks to join Mike Boynton Jr.’s staff at the University of Michigan as an assistant coach, a league source confirmed to the Orlando Sentinel on Saturday.

Under Murphy, Osceola finished each of the last three regular seasons atop the G League’s Eastern Conference and reached the G League Finals in 2025.
Prior to becoming Osceola’s head coach, Murphy served as an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic for three seasons (2020-23) and two as the team’s basketball operations analyst (2018-20).
The MichiganInsider of 247Sports first reported Murphy’s move to the Wolverines on Friday night.
Michigan hired Boynton Jr. after the Dallas Mavericks lured Dusty May away in early June. Boynton Jr. served as an assistant coach under May when the Wolverines went 64-13 the last two seasons and captured the program’s second NCAA national championship in April.
Murphy came to Orlando after he served as a graduate assistant with the men’s basketball team at Ball State University in 2018. Before his time with Ball State, he spent one season (2016-17) as a G League scout for the Atlanta Hawks.

Murphy’s career path has been nothing short of unique.
Intent on attending law school after graduating from Columbia University in 2012, Murphy’s hobby was writing about sports. He wrote for multiple basketball blogs in school before eventually getting his first break in the coaching industry.
In 2013, he took a leap and became an assistant coach for the then-Fort Wayne Mad Ants, the G League affiliate of the Indiana Pacers. Murphy spent three seasons there.
“I wouldn’t be where I am without the G League,” Murphy previously told the Sentinel. “To see it continue to grow and become part of every NBA franchise is really exciting. I always tell coaches that there’s no better experience than being in the G League. Your contributions really matter.”
As Osceola begins a search for its next coach, Murphy heads to Michigan to help the Wolverines repeat as national champions.
