Following a 14-0 run-rule win in four innings over Snohomish, Washington (the Northwest champs), to open the LLSWS tournament Sunday, Lake Mary, representing the Southeast, upped the run count Monday in a 15-0 rout over Italy (Europe-Africa) in just three innings.
The Little League Softball run-rule ends a game when there is a 10-run margin after four innings, or 15 runs after three innings. There are 12 teams in the tournament, divided into two six-team brackets in a double elimination format. Lake Mary is in the Purple Bracket. The winners of each bracket advance to the championship game, which will be this coming Sunday.
The top two hitters in the Lake Mary lineup, Zoey Brandon and Avery Little, both went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Little, the No. 2 hitter, also went 3-for-3 in Sunday’s win.
“I’m just focusing on swinging through the ball hard,” Little, the team’s catcher, said in a post-game interview on ESPN2 after Monday’s victory. “We play for each other and all love each other on this team.”
After scoring three runs on three hits in the first inning, Lake Mary took advantage of three errors and three wild pitches by Italy to score seven times in the second inning.
“We have bats from the leadoff spot all the way down to the 12th batter,” said Lake Mary manager Brent Fieser, who was an assistant coach last year. “The lineup is set up to spread out speed and power evenly. It’s been the same lineup all season with everyone knowing their role and doing their job.”
This is the second consecutive year that Lake Mary softball has advanced to the World Series. Last year, the All-Stars lost their first game, won twice, and lost a heartbreaker to Oklahoma on a walk-off home run.
In the pitching circle, Brynn Fieser struck out five in two innings with only one walk and no hits given up, while Riley Tolan had three strikeouts in an inning. Tolan also drove in two runs with a single, as did Aria Tormos.
In Sunday’s shutout win, Chloe Cheek had seven strikeouts, while Callie Ousley had three RBI.
Ousley also reached base twice against Italy, scoring once and driving in a run, while Cheek had a single, walk and two runs scored.
