Atlantic Center for the Arts has named a new director as the organization prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027.

Earlier this month, William Skaggs became the executive director of the New Smyrna Beach-based arts organization. The new leader brings more than 20 years of experience guiding arts and education organizations, most recently as the chief executive officer of The Sarasota Players.
In February, the previous executive director, Jennifer Coolidge — who formerly worked as the chief fundraiser for Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and lead curator for the Mills Gallery — transitioned into the role of director of philanthropy and campaign to support fundraising efforts associated with Atlantic Center for the Arts’ 50th anniversary.
Nancy Tallent, chair of the board of trustees who served as interim executive director, said that Skagg’s “leadership experience, collaborative spirit and commitment to the arts align beautifully with the mission of Atlantic Center for the Arts.”
“Serving as Interim Executive Director has been an honor, and welcoming William into this role is an exciting moment for Atlantic Center,” said Tallent in a news release. “As we approach our 50th Anniversary, William is exactly the kind of thoughtful, community-centered leader who will guide Atlantic Center into its next era.”
In his leadership of The Sarasota Players, Skaggs secured more than $1 million in federal and local funding during the COVID-19 pandemic and negotiated a 30-year facility partnership with the City of Sarasota. His earlier roles at Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center and Western Kentucky University involved strengthening cultural institutions, expanding community engagement and supporting artists across disciplines.

Founded in 1977 by Florida artist and environmentalist Doris “Doc” Leeper, Atlantic Center for the Arts hosts artist residencies, community programs and performing arts at its main 11-acre campus as well as gallery space at Arts on Douglas in downtown New Smyrna Beach. The organization also hosts the annual Images: A Festival of the Arts.
Longtime board member Margery Pabst Steinmetz said that “William’s energy and perspective will help us deepen that work and strengthen our impact for decades to come.”
Skaggs expressed enthusiasm for his new role and the future of the organization he now leads.
“Atlantic Center for the Arts has an extraordinary history and a powerful mission,” said Skaggs in a news release. “I am inspired by this campus, by the community’s commitment to the arts, and by the vision that has guided Atlantic Center for nearly 50 years. I look forward to partnering with the board, staff and community to shape the next chapter.”
