Bianchi: Scott Frost needs Alonza Barnett to end UCF’s quarterback curse

The last time UCF fans were this excited about a transfer quarterback, KJ Jefferson came riding into Orlando with the reputation of a conquering hero.

We all know how that worked out.

Jefferson, the celebrated transfer from Arkansas, was supposed to be the quarterback who would elevate Gus Malzahn’s offense and establish UCF as a legitimate Big 12 contender. Instead, his UCF career essentially began with warning lights flashing everywhere.

Even in a 57-3 opening-night demolition of hopelessly overmatched New Hampshire in 2024, Jefferson looked uncomfortable. He missed his first three passes, didn’t complete one until late in the first quarter, fumbled on the second possession and later threw an interception directly to a defender.

UCF won by 54 points, and somehow its quarterback still gave Knights fans reason to worry.

In retrospect, maybe that was the beginning of the end for Malzahn.

Which brings us to Thursday night at the Bounce House, where another highly decorated transfer quarterback made his UCF debut in another season opener against another badly overmatched opponent.

This time, UCF desperately needs the story to have a different ending.

Alonza Barnett III took his first meaningful steps toward becoming the quarterback UCF has been searching for seemingly forever as the Knights annihilated Bethune-Cookman 73-6.

Barnett finished 11-of-18 passing for 158 yards and a touchdown and also ran for a score before calling it a night following the first series of the third quarter. Of course, this game wasn’t so much about Barnett’s numbers; it was more about Barnett looking like he was in complete control of Coach Scott Frost’s offense

“Alonza is such a plus intellectually and understanding the game, and that actually allows us to do a lot of different things on offense,” Frost said. “We now have a more detailed offense and a quarterback who can run it. We give him the opportunity to change more protections and change more plays and get us in the right thing. Man, it gives you a lot of confidence as a head coach when you start calling a play and he already knows what you’re calling.”

UCF went up 14-0 before the Bounce House crowd even had time to bounce. Duke Watson ran for a 64-yard touchdown on UCF’s second play from scrimmage, followed by a 47-yard Jayden Williams pick 6 for a 14-0 lead. From there, Barnett took over and ran the offense with precision.

UCF made it 21-0 on its second drive with Barnett doing a little bit of everything. Unlike some UCF quarterbacks of the recent pass, Barnett got the ball out quickly and accurately. He ran a naked bootleg for nine yards and first down. He threaded a pass between defenders for 11 yards to Caden Piening to put UCF in scoring position. And then he deftly ran an option play for a 5-yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead.

On the very next possession, he threaded a pass over the middle and hit Jonathan Bibbs in stride for a 23-yard touchdown and a 28-0 lead. And from there, UCF went to score a school-record-tying 73 points and record the most lopsided victory in school history.

Despite the offensive explosion, what is most impressive about Barnett is his quest for perfection. Although UCF compiled 560 yards and scored 10 TDs, Barnett was more than a little annoyed that he sailed a pass for an interception while working on their two-minute drill with the Knights up 38–0 late in the first half.

“That just can’t happen,” Barnett said. “Point blank, I didn’t execute. The guys around me are relying on me to be my best each and every play.”

Overall, though, he couldn’t have been happier about his first game as a Knight.

“This is the stuff I dreamed of and prayed about when I came here,” he said of the atmosphere. “It was amazing.”

Yes, it was only Bethune-Cookman. No, we shouldn’t get carried away after one night against a team UCF entered the game favored to beat by more than 40 points. But forgive Knights fans if they’re ready to believe again. They’ve been waiting long enough.

Thursday was the season opener marking the 20-year anniversary of the Bounce House, a stadium that has witnessed some of the greatest moments in UCF football history. Yet for much of the past several years, the most important position on the field has been defined by instability, injuries and departures.

UCF hasn’t had the same healthy, established quarterback for an entire season since Dillon Gabriel.

Gabriel suffered a broken collarbone three games into 2021, and the revolving door has been spinning ever since.

Mikey Keene replaced him and eventually transferred. John Rhys Plumlee had the makings of a terrific UCF quarterback but always seemed to be limping, hobbling or recovering from something. Dylan Rizk, Timmy McClain, Jacurri Brown and EJ Colson all came and went.

And KJ Jefferson?

He arrived with NFL size, SEC credentials and enormous expectations but instead became the symbol of everything that went wrong during Malzahn’s final season.

Last year wasn’t much better. Scott Frost’s chosen starter, Cam Fancher, was injured in the opener, forcing Frost to turn to Tayven Jackson, who never seemed like the quarterback Frost truly wanted running his offense.

Different coaches. Different quarterbacks. Same problem.

For a program that once went seamlessly from McKenzie Milton to Gabriel, UCF has spent years trying to rediscover stability at the most important position in sports. In the previous 24 games, UCF had six different starting QBs.

That’s why Barnett isn’t just another transfer quarterback.

He’s the most important player of Frost’s second tenure.

Frost needs Barnett to be the quarterback who makes everything else work. The quarterback who distributes the football like the point guard Barnett says he wants to be. The quarterback who gets the ball to Speedy Thomas, Josh Derry and the rest of UCF’s playmakers.

Most of all, Frost needs Barnett to stay healthy and stay behind center.

“One of the reasons we recruited him is he’s a real competitor,” Frost said before the game. “I’m a competitor, so I vibe well with guys that care and are going to fight with everything they have to try to get it done.”

Barnett certainly has the résumé. At James Madison last season, he produced more than 3,300 yards of total offense and 38 touchdowns, won Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year honors, led the Dukes to a conference championship and helped take them to the College Football Playoff.

But UCF fans have learned the hard way that résumés don’t complete passes. They’ve learned that transfer-portal hype means nothing once the lights come on. They’ve learned that the difference between a promising season and a lost season can sometimes be one awkward hit, one injured shoulder, one bad ankle – or one quarterback who simply isn’t as good as everyone hoped.

That’s what made Thursday night matter even though the opponent wasn’t supposed to.

UCF didn’t need Barnett to prove he could beat Bethune-Cookman.

UCF needed Barnett to begin proving he could become the guy.

The guy Frost can build his offense around; the guy teammates believe in; the guy who walks into the huddle against Big 12 opponents in October and November and makes everybody believe UCF has a chance.

For too many years, UCF football has lived with uncertainty at quarterback. Twenty years after the Bounce House opened, UCF is trying to recapture the electricity that once made this stadium and this program one of college football’s most entertaining stories.

Scott Frost has returned to make UCF relevant again.

And whether anybody wants to admit it this early or not, much of his second act rests on the right arm and legs of Alonza Barnett III.

Thursday night was only the beginning.

Even so, after years of injuries, transfers and disappointments, Knights fans are entitled to ask one hopeful question:

Have they finally found the right guy?

They’d better hope so.

Because if Alonza Barnett III isn’t the answer, you have to start wondering whether UCF will ever find one.
