Damn! Don’t hold back, Maxwell!
I cheered out loud when I read Scott Maxwell’s July 15 column “Courts confirm Florida’s ‘Stop WOKE’ law is un-American garbage.” Because, yes, how can people call themselves patriots when they support blatant efforts like those of our leaders, trampling over our U.S. Constitution?

But he rightly pointed out that these people couldn’t even try to push such agendas unless they were enabled to do so. And we are enabling them every time we blindly vote for candidates just because they belong to a specific party.
I used to vote Republican in this state for decades (remember Jeb Bush?), but i can’t do this anymore in all conscience.
I suggest we all need to vote Democratic this year, vote the Republicans all out of office — then hopefully in two years the GOP will see the error of their (recent) ways. Put up better, smarter, kinder candidates, then I’ll be able to vote Republican again.

Parking unfair to those without cellphones
Orlando is switching to new parking meters using cellphones to pay rather than cash. There’s just this big problem: what if you don’t have a cellphone because your budget can’t afford one? How can you park downtown if you can’t use the parking meters?

Trump’s ‘loyalty’ is obedience
We don’t refer to dog training facilities as loyalty schools; they are obedience schools. The same is true of all one-way endeavors. Men and their canine friends often express their mutual respect and loyalty, but neither can be taught or bought; they must be earned. This is true of human-to-human relationships.

When Donald Trump states that he requires loyalty from his employees, in my view, he is misusing the term “loyalty.” What Trump means is that he demands absolute obedience, not just to his direct orders, but to his personal philosophies and those expressed as part of the particular business in which each employee operates. I don’t believe he respects anyone, not even his relatives, nor is he loyal to anyone (other than himself). Those who made the mistake of believing they were beyond such limitations now find themselves on the outside, looking in. If you doubt this, I ask you to recall Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo, William Barr, James Mattis, Ben Carson, Pam Bondi or Nikki Haley. These are but a few; Trump seemingly no longer has a use for these folks.
Politicians who supported him on all but one issue are referred to as scum or worse. He erroneously believes “loyalty” is a one-way relationship.

Trump’s link to ancient history
It was a delight to read Ronn Mars’ letter, “The sands of time, and Trump” (July 16). I consider the poem “Ozymandias” to be one of the greatest poems in the English language. Ozymandias is the ancient Greek name for Ramses II, one of ancient Egypt’s most powerful and long-serving pharaohs. The Egyptians erected a monument in his likeness in about 1200 B.C.E., shortly after his death. The Persians invaded Egypt in 550 B.C.E. and knocked the head off of the statue. I visited Egypt in 2012 and that was the must-see event of the trip. And, there it is — 3,000 years later, and yes, the “lone and level sands stretch far away.” I think that it’s likely that whatever monuments Trump erects to honor himself will meet a similar fate as Ramses II’s statue.
