A city of Sanford truck driver has been charged after a city dump truck struck and killed a bicyclist Tuesday morning, police said.

Shawannia Smith, 46, the driver, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death and cited for a right-of-way violation involving a cyclist, according to the release.
Sanford police received a 911 call around 8 a.m. Tuesday reporting a crash involving a bicyclist at the intersection of West Airport Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, according to the release.
The dump truck traveling north on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard hit a bicyclist who was also heading north and attempting to turn right onto Airport Boulevard, police said. The driver did not stop, according to the release.

A witness stopped to help the bicyclist and gave officers a description of the vehicle, which police said they located a short time later.
The bicyclist was taken to a hospital and died of their injuries, police said. The victim’s name hasn’t been released yet, police said Tuesday.
