A Georgia man visiting Florida was bitten by a shark off Daytona Beach Shores on Saturday, according to Volusia County officials.

The 21-year-old man was wading in waist-deep water in front of the Dunlawton Beach Approach just before 5:30 p.m. when he was bitten on the left foot and ankle by a shark estimated to be about 4 feet in length, according to an emailed statement from Tamra Malphurs, director of Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue.
“He was treated on scene by Beach Safety personnel and transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” she said.
Volusia County leads the state in shark bites each year, according to the International Shark Attack File in Gainesville. Most happen in New Smyrna Beach near Ponce Inlet, giving the city the title of “shark bite capital of the world.”
According to stats maintained by the group, Volusia County had six reported shark bites out of Florida’s 11 total in 2025.

That represents 54% of the state’s total.
“This is lower than the most recent five-year annual average of 10 incidents in the area,” the file states on its website.
Two others were reported last year in Broward County, with two in Lee County and one in Miami-Dade County.
Florida had the most incidents among the U.S. total, which saw 25 unprovoked bites last year, of which only one in California was fatal.
Worldwide, there were 65 shark bites including nine fatal attacks. Australia had the second most bites after the U.S. with 21, of which five were fatal.
