Also this week, No. 7 Bishop Moore faces a big challenge of its own, traveling to California to play Palos Verdes in a Thursday night game.
Bishop Moore (0-1) is coming off a season-opening overtime loss to Rural Division state champion Hawthorne, and the Hornets are underdogs this week. Palos Verdes is ranked No. 37 in California with an 85.3 power rating. Bishop Moore is No. 65 in Florida with a 70.3 rating.
Deland (1-0) is on an 11-game regular-season winning streak, including last year’s 10-0 mark. The Bulldogs will welcome St. Frances (0-0) of Baltimore, the No. 3-ranked team in the country. One reason DeLand is playing a team of such caliber, besides the fact that DeLand coach Rick Darlington never shies away from any opponent, is that Darlington has a hard time filling his 10-game schedule.

Bringing in an out-of-state team was part of the solution. The other was offering opponents travel money, which is why DeLand has eight home games this season. The Bulldogs went to Lake Wales and pulled out a 35-34 win last week and will play seven straight at home. Their second road trip will be a short one to Daytona Beach to play Mainland on Oct. 23, in a game that is likely to determine the Class 6A District 2 title.
No. 4 The First Academy is the talent-laden team the Eagles host on Friday. TFA came from behind to beat the Eagles 28-24 in a 2024 season opener in a game that snapped Edgewater’s 27-game regular season winning streak. That game later became a forfeit win for Edgewater after the FHSAA found TFA guilty of rules violations.
TFA routed Dr. Phillips 58-7, while Edgewater beat Ocoee 34-6 last week.
Edgewater is 11-0 in regular season play under second-year coach Patrick Browning.

No. 15 St. Cloud (1-0) is traveling to Marietta, Georgia, to face former Edgewater coach Cam Duke and his Marietta Blue Devils. Marietta lost its opener last week to NFL Academy Europe.
Seminole County has a pair of intriguing matchups with newly-ranked Lake Howell, No. 16, playing host to No. 8 Seminole; and No. 11 Oviedo playing at No. 5 Lake Mary, which is opening its season with a district game. Oviedo lost at Titusville in a controversial finish last week.
In Orange County matchups, No. 6 West Orange (1-0) hosts Horizon (1-0), and No. 12 Windermere (1-0) takes its 21-game winning streak to Innovation (1-0).
