TFA had its hands full; Evans romps; Seminole vs. Lake Mary was tight | Week 8 Football Live Updates

No. 10 Evans defeated South Lake 48-17

Evans (4-3, 2-0), on its homecoming night, led South Lake (2-5, 1-1) just 13-7 at halftime, but it was all Trojans in the second half. The victory, coupled with Wekiva’s loss to Lake Minneola, secured the Class 5A District 4 title for Evans.

Trojans running back Daveon Williams started the 38-point, second-half outburst, scoring on a 21-yard touchdown in the third quarter. On the next possession, Evans’ ball-hawking safety Demtre Pryor made his second interception of the season and returned it to the South Lake 6. It was the junior’s 16th career interception.

That set up a 12-yard Will Jackson touchdown pass to Brian Dillard.

Dillard, one of the top receivers in the state, made 8 catches for 204 yards and two TDs. Jackson was 14-of-23 passing for 283 yards and three TDs.

“We just came out and played Evans ball,” said Pryor, who had two interceptions in the game. “We had a few slip-ups in the beginning of the season. And we’re really going to show everybody our true identity.”

Williams had 11 carries for 85 yards and two TDs.

No. 4 Seminole defeated Lake Mary 21-19

The undefeated Seminoles (7-0, 2-0) trailed most of the way, but scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to overcome the upset bid by their rivals to win at home. They sit alone in first place in 6A-3.

Lake Mary (1-6, 0-2) led 12-0 after Jarman, who suffered a broken collarbone in Week 2 and was playing his first game since, connected with Kel Gainer for a 25-yard TD pass, Lucas Parker made a 43-yard field goal and the Rams got a safety.

Seminole’s Tyree Howard scored on a short TD in the second quarter and Lake Mary led 12-6 at halftime. The third quarter was scoreless, but Jamar Buckner’s short touchdown gave Seminole its first lead early in the fourth,13-12.

Blocked field goals have become a frequent occurrence with coach Karl Calhoun’s Seminoles, and they got another one midway through the fourth. Jamarion Coleman flashed into the backfield to deny Parker on a 21-yard attempt. Seminole scored on the ensuing possession as Howard out-sprinted the Lake Mary defense for a 77-yard touchdown run, and the two-point conversion gave Seminole just enough cushion.

Jarman threw another TD pass to Caleb Thomas, but Seminole ran out the clock.

Howard ran the ball 7 times for 115 yards and two TDs and caught six passes for 113 yards. Quarterback Daniel Proenza was 13-of-17 passing for 192 yards.

On defense, Coleman led the way with 13 tackles, including 3 for loss. Mason Willis had 12 tackles, 4 TFL and a sack, King Manley had 11 tackles and 3 TFL and Jaxson Wade had 10 tackles.

“It’s Lake Mary and Seminole; it’s always going to be a big-time game, a rivalry game,” said Calhoun said. “I’m just happy our guys made a few more plays to seal the game there at the end.”

No. 2 TFA defeated Archbishop McCarthy 31-24

Two-way star Bam Whitfield, a senior cornerback/receiver, returned a kickoff 80 yards to score the game-winning TD late in the fourth quarter. He also scored on a 75-yard run in the third quarter.

The Royals  (6-1) trailed 10-0 when they finally got on the board midway through the third quarter on a 9-yard run by freshman Hyquez Russell.

The Royals took the lead late in third on a 60-yard TD run by freshman quarterback Deuce Woods Jr. On the next possession, Woods scored again on a 43-yard TD run on a fourth-and-3 play.

McCarthy tied the game at 24-24 with 4:05 left, but 10 seconds later, it was Whitfield time again, and he broke the tie.

Hagerty tied the game midway through the third quarter on a 7-yard TD run by Jonathan Lewis. That was set up by an 88-yard run by quarterback Royce Jenkins after Hagerty’s defense stopped Boone at the 3-yard line.
